Summary

The House of Representatives, alongside the Senate, is one of the two chambers of the Colorado General Assembly. It consists of 65 members who are elected from specific Representative Districts. The primary function of the Chief Clerk's Office, within the House of Representatives, is to provide nonpartisan assistance and advice to the Speaker of the House and members of the House of Representatives to aid in meeting the legal and parliamentary processes and requirements of the lawmaking process. The Chief Clerk’s Office also provides administrative and logistical support to all 65 Representatives, their legislative aides, and majority and minority caucus staff.

Examples of duties

The Chief Clerk’s Office is seeking a versatile, professional, and detail-oriented individual to fill a seasonal role as a House Services Clerk before and during the upcoming legislative session (November through May). Operating under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Clerk, the House Services Clerk provides administrative and operational support to ensure the smooth daily functioning of the House of Representatives.

Job Functions:

• Responds to questions and requests from legislators, legislative aides, lobbyists, staff, and members of the public.
• Fulfills legislative requests for printing, correspondence, stationary, and name badges.
• Registers volunteer lobbyists and maintains organized and accurate records.
• Manages mail distribution and billroom filing.
• Maintains records of physical inventory and purchases.
• Updates the social calendar on the legislature’s public website.
• Manages House Services workflow and delegates tasks to student interns, under the direction of the Assistant Chief Clerk.

Schedule:

• Seasonal, starting in November and concluding in May 2027.
• Scheduled hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

• Environment: Work is performed in person in professional legislative offices, the mailroom, and the billroom.
• Demands: Primarily sedentary desk work requiring prolonged sitting or standing, extensive keyboarding, and visual acuity.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Proven capacity to maintain strict nonpartisanship, i.e. neutrality, confidentiality, and integrity across both sides of the political aisle.
• Attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills marked by tact, flexibility, and a positive attitude in a fast-paced, politically charged environment.
• Required proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel), Google Office Suite, and Zoom. Preferred experience with WordPerfect.
• Previous legislative experience is not required, but an interest in the legislative process is highly preferred.
• Prior clerical experience is preferred.

This position is not part of the state classified personnel system and therefore does not have an appeals procedure.

Supplemental information

Compensation:

The salary for the position is $225 per day. The House of Representatives provides a competitive benefits package, including eligibility for health and dental insurance and your choice of Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution PERA retirement plan. Based on performance, the House Services Clerk may be asked to return for future legislative sessions. This is a perfect opportunity for a candidate with prior employment with the State of Colorado, who is looking to add to PERA years of service. However, the position is expected to exceed PERA’s 110-day limit on working after retirement without a reduction in benefits.
