Job Summary
The cardiovascular genetic counseling team at University of Utah, Division of Pediatric Cardiology, is hiring a Cardiology Genetics Intern to perform clinical and administrative functions in support of genetic counseling services.
Most individuals in a genetic counseling internship position aspire to apply to a graduate genetic counseling program. Applicants may also be interested in unique health care positions, human genetics, or cardiology.
Employee Health Requirements:
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Assist with daily operations.
  • Screen and evaluate new and follow-up referrals.
  • Administrative calls to patients, healthcare providers, and genetic testing laboratories.
  • Assist with the coordination of genetic testing, initiate genetic test forms, transportation of samples, resolve problems with missing samples, missing signatures, etc.
  • Assist with case preparation.
  • Collection of relevant medical records and lab reports, medical records review, HIPAA authorizations, records release forms, and coordination of patient intake forms.
  • Digitize pedigrees.
  • Review and upload forms and results into EMR
  • Update patient tracking database.
  • Maintain tracking metrics.
  • Stock testing kits.
  • Screen phone calls, answer questions about the status of insurance authorization, status of genetic testing, etc.
  • Aid with the insurance approval process.
  • Liaise with other hospital departments as needed in support of clinic operations.
  • Coordinating prospective shadows in clinic.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Research Assistant, I
Requires little to no related experience.
This is an Entry-Level position in the Support track.

Expected Pay Range: $17.33 – $21.81

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

  • Works well both independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts or desire to learn.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • Experience working with patients and/or administrative experience in a medical office is preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and changing priorities while still maintaining task completion.
  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.
  • Clerical or customer service experience.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
