Thank you for your interest in the Surgical Stream at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) for the 2027 Clinical Year.

About the Role

You will be an important member of our clinical units by ensuring the delivery of high-quality person-centred care to all patients. You will work within multi-disciplinary teams to provide effective and efficient evidence-based care, whilst also demonstrating commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.

  • Manage time effectively, organising daily workload through prioritisation, and demonstrate punctuality
  • Use the principles of evidence-based practice, and access relevant current literature in making assessments and formulating management decisions
  • Use clear communication with patients, with awareness of cultural, religious and gender difference
  • Recognise the ethical complexity of medical practice, and follow professional and ethical codes
  • Provide clear and comprehensive handover information to senior clinicians, colleagues, nurses and allied health professionals) in particular on very sick patients.
  • Respect the leadership role and the varied other roles and responsibilities within a team

The Surgical Stream allows early career doctors to be exposed to a range of general and specialty surgical rotations, in order to help you meet SET training pre-requisites. St Vincent’s has a very active Pre-SET Society, along with mentorship and SET surgical supervisors, to assist you on your career path.

As a successful Surgical cohort PGY3/+, you will have the opportunity to nominate your rotation preferences. These may include General Surgery, Sub-specialty Surgery – ENT, Cardiothoracics, Plastics, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Orthopaedics, Trauma and critical care areas – Emergency and ICU

Please note that with our strong commitment to our Secondment and Regional Hospitals, HMOs may a roster that includes rotations outside our Fitzroy campus. These may include rotations at Werribee Mercy, Swan Hill District Hospital, Warrnambool Base Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and RMH.

Duration of appointment: 01 February 2026 – 06 February 2027 (extended contracts may be considered)

Classifications for this position will range from HM12 – HM20 ($90,607.40 - $158,878.72) pro rata for part-time.

  • Current National criminal history check and Working With Children Check or willing to obtain

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) has been providing outstanding care for Victoria's children and their families for over 147 years.

We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas.

With a passionate, highly skilled and committed staff campus wide of over 5,000, we provide a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and young people.

We are the designated state-wide major trauma centre for paediatrics in Victoria and a Nationally Funded Centre for cardiac and liver transplantation.
