Location: St. Clair Shores, MI (20952 12 Mile Rd, Suite 200)

Position Type: Full-Time (40 Hours/Week) | Day Shift | No Nights, No Weekends

  • Certifications: ASCP Histotechnician (HT) certification (or equivalent) AND Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) required.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Histotechnologist Manager manages, designs, assigns and/or performs all aspects of department procedures, quality control processes and performance improvement activities for the department. The Manager also interviews and recommends hires to director, trains new employees and oversees the competency assessment of staff. Is responsible for operating the department within approved departmental operation and capital budgets, including staffing, quality, safety, and education plans. Meets departmental goals to support service.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develops and oversees work processes, including workflow and staff assignments, to achieve efficiency, production, and quality goals.
  • Ensures laboratory is prepared for scheduled and unscheduled inspections from regulatory agencies and internal auditors.
  • Supervises histotechnologists, technicians, and assistants when processing tissue biopsy specimens.
  • Provides oversight for routine histology functions, including processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining.
  • Observes routine patient test performances, including patient preparation, specimen handling, and testing.
  • Serves as a staff resource and assists with performance reviews.
  • Assists with troubleshooting related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, coverslipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens.
  • Supports cross departmental partnerships and communication amongst Pathologists, Pathologists' Assistants, hospital staff and clients taking immediate steps to correct, follow through and report any mistakes or errors to laboratory leadership including resolution to customer service issues within guidelines.
  • Provides leadership and mentoring to histotechnicians, histotechnologists and laboratory support staff.
  • Continually maintains workspaces in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner.
  • Assists in training new employees and histology students/interns.
  • Is responsible for department equipment maintenance and upgrades.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.
  • Employees shall adhere to high standards of ethical conduct and will comply with and assist in complying with all applicable laws and regulations. This will include and not be limited to following the Solaris Health Code of Conduct and all Solaris Health and Affiliated Practice policies and procedures; maintaining the confidentiality of patients' protected health information in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); immediately reporting any suspected concerns and/or violations to a supervisor and/or the Compliance Department; and the timely completion the Annual Compliance Training.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Histotechnician (HT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent required.
  • Certified as Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QHIC) by A.S.C.P required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors degree in a related field required.
  • Master's degree in a related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 6 years of experience in a Histology Laboratory setting required.
  • 3 years of experience in supervisory position in laboratory required.
