Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting, according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Receives and logs specimens using the laboratory information system which ensures the identity of specimens through the testing and long-term storage process.
Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tasks being performed.
Cuts microthin sections of paraffin embedded tissue samples using standard microtome techniques to prepare quality sections for staining.
Performs routine and special stains on specimens using approved differential staining techniques to distinguish normal from pathologic cells.
Performs equipment preventive maintenance on all equipment to minimize service interruptions.
Fixes and embeds surgical tissues using semi-automated and fully automated equipment to prepare tissues for microthin sectioning.
Correctly prepares cytology specimens for cellblocks or slides.
Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.
Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
