As aHistotechnologist, you willdeliverclear, top-qualityslidesfor microscopicexamination You will prepare each specimen withpristineprecision,includingtissue fixation, dehydration, sectioning,mountingand special staining.Ultimately, yourefforts are critical to our ability to diagnosis and treatnumerousconditions, allowing you topositivelyinfluence the comprehensive care provided at Cleveland Clinic.


A caregiver in this position works Nightshift from, 8:30pm-3:00am


A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Transport tissue specimens to the Laboratory.

  • Perform immunohistochemical and in-situ hybridization procedures, including handling and storage of probes and antibodies.

  • Analyze andevaluateassays for sensitivity and specificity.

  • Embed and prepare sections by cutting frozen or paraffin embedded tissue for immunohistochemistry, in-situhybridizationor other special procedures.

  • Mount,labeland distribute prepared microscope slides to Pathologists orappropriate areasfor interpretation.

  • Preparereagentsbuffers,solutionsand stains.

  • Replace reagents and perform daily maintenance on automated instrumentation.

  • File surgical and autopsy blocks used for immunohistochemical techniques.


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor’sDegree inBiology,Microbiology,Chemistryor a related field

  • ORmeet the CLIA qualifications for Histotechnologist (HTL)

  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements concerning chemical hygiene and bloodborne pathogens

  • Histotechnician(HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)


Preferred qualifications for the ideal caregiver include:

  • Hands-on laboratory training from an accredited Histotechnology program

  • A minimum of one year of experience in a Histology laboratory setting

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC)

  • At least one year of hands-on bench experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens, slides and utilizing instrumentation.
  • Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.
  • Typical physical demands include ability to sit, stand or walk extensively.

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
