Job Description

Under the general supervision of the technologist in charge, prepares tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, embeds sections and stains slides from clinical and research according to standardized department lab procedures for an optimal microscopic examination and analysis. Monitors and maintains related equipment and supplies; and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs specimen collection, accessioning and logging routines:
    • Checks each specimen for criteria for acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate paperwork.
    • Records the receipt of specimens in the log and assigns identification number according to department protocol.
    • Refers any problem specimen to the area of collection and informs the supervisor for follow-up action where necessary.
  • Performs tissue grossing of dermatopathology specimens.
    • Maintains and assures specimen identification by correctly labeling cassettes, and maintains workflow in concert with the pathologist.
    • Cleans the workstation at the completion of grossing procedures. Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
  • Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides:
    • Sets the tissue processor instrument for tissue processing according to departmental procedure.
    • Embeds the processed tissue using the embedding center instrument.
    • Cuts embedded tissues for slide sections using the microtome instrument.
    • Performs routine and special stains according to departmental procedures.
    • Performs all of the above duties according to schedule to maintain appropriate workflow and timely completion.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of a CAHEA-accredited histotechnology program; with an Associate’s degree plus one year of full time experience in histopathology within the last three years under the supervision of a pathologist or 3 years of recent histology laboratory experience
  • ASCP certification as a histologic technician or eligible for certification

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position.Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
