Histology Technician Trainees are members of the laboratory team who prepare tissue specimens for evaluation by producing very thin slices of human tissue for microscopic examination under the direction of a Histotechnologist. A Pathologist then uses these complex techniques to establish and confirm a patient diagnosis. The tasks performed by the histology technician trainee require fine motor skills, meticulous attention to detail, mechanical ability and a strong knowledge of the biological sciences. There are five intricate steps which include: 1) Pre-Analytical/Fixation, 2) Processing, 3) Embedding, 4) Sectioning and 5) Staining; each an integral part of the trainees' job.

This trainee position is for one year. Within six months of completing the training program, the Histology Technician Trainee must take and pass either the HT or HTL ASCP certification exam. After passing the certification exam, the trainee will be moved into a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist role.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Under the direct supervision of a Histotechnologist, orients tissue samples during embedding process and places tissue specimens in paraffin blocks.
  • Under the direct supervision of a Histotechnologist, performs tissue microtomy; cuts thins sections of tissue and mounts them on a glass microscope slide.
  • Performs routine H&E staining procedures and coverslips glass slides.
  • Under the direct supervision of a Histotechnologist, performs Histochemical stains.
  • Disposes of bio-hazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps, and other potential hazardous materials according to policy.
  • Demonstrates technical competence with LIS, EMR, and PC.
  • Assists with equipment maintenance, documentation of quality control, and rotation of tissue processor solutions.
  • Follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards; adheres to all policies and procedures.
  • Accurately prepares, labels, and stores reagents, controls, and specimens for analysis.
  • Completes education requirements and course work and submits appropriate documentation where applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited* college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both),ORAn associate degree from a regionally accredited* college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree
  • Associate of Science
  • High School Graduate


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Biology or Chemistry
  • Prior laboratory experience
