What we want  

The Histology Technicianperforms the various tasksrequiredfor receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Performs embedding, cutting, mounting, and staining procedures. Sorts and prioritizes tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or necropsy cases according to the standardsrequired Follows TAMU policy and proceduresin accordance withlab safety.

  • Salary: $15.85/ hour

  • Schedule/Location:College Station, TX/Full-Time Mon-Fri. This position may requireworkingon university holidays and/or weekends.

Qualifications

RequiredEducation and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related lab experience.

PreferredQualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific field.

  • HT (ASCP) certification

  • Ability to perform processing, cutting, embedding, staining, andcoverslipping.

  • Performs QC documentation, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Responsibilities

Communication with pathologists and residents

  • Answers questions, complete requests, and follows up with pathologists and residents.

  • Monitorssubmission’spage and completes cases when they are ready for delivery to the pathologist.

  • Monitors slide and/or block check out requests from pathologists and residents.

  • Evaluates and analyzes results byQCingslides before sending them to the pathologist and residents.

Embedding

  • Sortsspecimens according to priority when embedding.

  • Embedsspecimens into blocks.

Preparation of Histology slides

  • Performs microtomy (cutting tissue sections)in accordance withgeneral approved plans and procedures

  • Performs routine staining of slides using an automated stainer.

  • Plans and executes procedures (and work details) for preparing solutions for performing special staining.

Specimen Processing

  • Retrieves specimens from the Necropsy Department.

  • Receives specimens for other cases when delivered to the Laboratory.

  • Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, and infiltration with paraffin.

Equipment maintenance

  • Periodicallymaintainsand cleans equipment as needed (microtomes, embedding unit, tissue processors, automatic stainer, and solvent recycler).

  • Records findings of equipment output through observations and measurements

Supplies

  • Uses computer equipment for controlling compiling datain order tomonitorinventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used.

  • Placesorders for replacements asrequired

Training

  • Assiststhe supervisor in planning and supervising technical operations of the student workers

  • Researchesand catalogs reference materials requiring understanding of subject matter theoryin order tobetterassistintrainingstudent workers.
