Serves as a lead person of sign crew and assists with the management of the sign inventory, installation of signs, paint, and thermoplastic markings. In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, operates equipment such as: Tandem Dump Truck, Backhoe, and motor grader. Assumes foreman duties in their absence. This includes, but not limited to: Entering time, ordering signs and year-end inventory. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Inspects signs for serviceability and safety, including night inspections and sign maintenance plan inspection. Devise a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Set up traffic control on interstates, primary and secondary routes according to SCMUTCD standards to warn motorist of road work ahead. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices. Practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material and waste. Produces daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests, complaint forms, and JSA's. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with slow plow attachment and sand/salt spreader/hopper to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency and/or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours, on-call hours, or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator ’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
