Operates heavy equipment such as paint truck to paint roadway lines including the installation of thermoplastic material for stop bars, turning lanes, or turn arrows. Also operates lowboy truck tractor in the transportation of paint containers and other paint materials. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, slope mower, and motor grader during winter months or when painting activities have ceased due to equipment breakdowns, weather, etc. Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck and skid steer loader for removing fallen trees from the roadway and tractor with large mower for mowing activities. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
