Summary

At Lexington Maintenance, operates backhoe in a safe and efficient manner in pulling shoulders and cleaning out drainage ditches. Cleans and maintains equipment to help prevent clogging and drainage issues. Ensures proper preventative maintenance is done in accordance with SCDOT Fleet Safety and Manufacturer's operation manual. Operates 5 yard, 8 yard, and tandem truck to haul rock, dirt, asphalt, and other materials from vendor to job site or stock pile at shop. Ensures tarp is in place and all loose material is removed from sides and tail gate of truck before operation begins. Performs preventative maintenance on truck and keep record of same. Flags traffic in low and high volume areas to protect motorist and crew members. Assists in the placing of traffic control devices in work zones according to the South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Operates motor grader in pulling shoulders when pulling shoulders and cleaning drainage ditches. Works with a shovel, bush axe, and sling blade to clean out ditches, open clogged pipe, and cut right-of-way at site areas. Removes and erects mailboxes and signs as necessary and restores disturbed areas. Operates heavy equipment during hazardous weather or emergencies to ensure the safety of the motoring public. Obtains and maintains a tanker endorsement for Commercial Drivers License.

Examples of duties

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
