Operates heavy equipment such as ditching tractor, excavator, motor grader, and backhoe in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Installs, constructs, and/or repairs sideline and cross line pipe, driveways, performs right-of-way clearing operations and opens pipes and re-establishes ditches. Operates tandem and sigle-axle dump trucks with trailers, and lowboy truck tractors for hauling materials and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction activities. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that equipment is greased, and lubricated, proper cooland and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used. Organizes work, assits foreman, and directs small and medium equipment operators in absence of crew lead. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand/salt spreader/hopper to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assits in emergency and/or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours, on-call hours, or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
