Transportation Maintenance Tech II:
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Maintenance Tech III:
Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
The essential duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech II include:
Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech III include:
May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
Trains other employees.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):
*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). The following License is required for the Transportation Maintenance Tech II and III:
• Commercial Class "A" Driver License (CDL) with an N Endorsement, and with no restrictions at time of application - This position requires driving a state vehicle.
