Position Description

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance

activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires

responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level

perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief include:Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs.

Assists in administration of the maintenance section.

Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.

Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.

Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.

Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.

Operates light and heavy equipment.

Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.

Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.

Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum QualificationsLicenses and Certifications:Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application with an N endorsement, and with no restriction - This position requires you to drive a state vehicle for TxDOT.Preferred Qualifications:Concrete experienceThe required competencies for the Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief include:Extensive knowledge of:Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work

The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device.Considerable knowledge of: Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures

Incident management procedures

Inventory/stock control procedures

Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codesExpert skill in:Operating light and heavy highway equipmentProficient skill in:Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations

Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment

Prioritizing and organizing work assignments

Interpreting applicable information

Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

The physical requirements and working conditions for the Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief include:Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions

Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals

Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or another device

Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts

Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
