An Intermediate Highway Design Engineer – Roundabouts supports the delivery of transportation infrastructure projects within a multidisciplinary engineering environment in Markham, ON, Canada This role contributes to provincial and municipal roadway design assignments, focusing on geometric design development for highways, interchanges, and urban road networks in coordination with internal technical teams.

The scope includes preparation of design packages through multiple project phases, ensuring alignment with MTO standards, TAC guidelines, and municipal requirements. Responsibilities span design development, technical documentation, and coordination with disciplines such as traffic, utilities, structures, and environmental services. The position also supports construction-phase activities and technical reviews. The ideal candidate offers at least five years of relevant experience in roundabout and highway design, including exposure to Ontario transportation standards and multidisciplinary project delivery environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop geometric design packages for highways, roundabouts, interchanges, and urban roadway corridors.
  • Prepare detailed alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and grading plans for roadway infrastructure design.
  • Coordinate drainage design and interface with stormwater management requirements.
  • Produce and review engineering drawings, technical reports, and quantity take-offs for accuracy and compliance.
  • Support preparation of contract documents, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Ensure design compliance with MTO standards, TAC guidelines, and municipal engineering requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including traffic engineering, utilities, structures, and environmental specialists.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and client coordination discussions.
  • Provide technical input during construction support, including design clarifications and issue resolution.

Qualifications

Required

  • Civil Engineering degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in highway and roundabout design.
  • Demonstrated experience with Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) projects or similar regulatory environments.
  • Proficiency in Torus, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and roadway design software platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of MTO standards, TAC guidelines, and municipal roadway design criteria.
  • Experience preparing geometric design components including alignments, profiles, and cross-sections.
  • Familiarity with traffic flow analysis and roadway safety design considerations.
  • Understanding of environmental impact considerations for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills.

Assets

  • Experience with Bentley InRoads or OpenRoads design software.
  • Exposure to interdisciplinary coordination across large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supporting construction-phase engineering services.
  • Familiarity with cost estimation and contract administration processes.
