High School Teacher/Tutor

Prep Academy Tutors of Northern Virginia — Fairfax, Virginia Area

Position Overview

Prep Academy Tutors of Northern Virginia is looking for exceptional educators who believe that the right instruction, delivered in the right environment, can make a lasting difference in a student’s academic journey.

We are seeking experienced, certified teachers and highly qualified educators to provide personalized, one-on-one tutoring to high school students in the Fairfax, Virginia area. We are looking for teachers with expertise across all high school subject areas, including Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies, World Languages, and other academic disciplines.

Our tutors work directly with students in their homes, creating focused learning environments where students can ask questions, strengthen their skills, master challenging concepts, prepare for assessments, and build greater academic confidence.

This role is especially well suited for current or former high school classroom teachers who enjoy the individualized nature of tutoring and want the opportunity to work closely with students outside of a traditional classroom setting.

What You’ll Do

As a High School Academic Tutor, you will:

• Deliver engaging, one-on-one instruction to high school students in the student’s home
• Provide instruction and academic support in your areas of subject-matter expertise
• Support students across a wide range of high school subjects, including Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, World Languages, and other disciplines
• Adapt lessons and instructional strategies to each student’s individual learning needs
• Reinforce classroom instruction and help students master challenging concepts
• Assist with homework, organization, study strategies, and preparation for assessments
• Support students preparing for standardized tests and other academic milestones
• Identify areas of academic difficulty and develop targeted strategies for improvement
• Provide enrichment and advanced academic support when appropriate
• Establish positive, professional relationships with students and their families
• Monitor student progress and communicate meaningful observations and updates
• Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and develop greater academic confidence
• Maintain a professional, supportive, and productive in-home learning environment
• Travel to students’ homes throughout the Fairfax, Virginia area and surrounding Northern Virginia communities

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for educators who bring both strong subject-matter knowledge and genuine teaching experience to every student interaction.

Ideal candidates will have:

• A bachelor’s degree or higher
• A valid Virginia teaching license/certificate or equivalent teaching credential
• Demonstrated high school classroom teaching experience
• Strong knowledge of at least one high school academic subject
• The ability to teach and support students at a variety of academic levels
• The ability to adapt instruction for different learning styles, abilities, and academic needs
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Patience, professionalism, reliability, and a student-centered approach
• Excellent organization and time-management skills
• Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to student homes
• Authorization to work in the United States

• Mathematics, including Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, and Calculus
• English Language Arts and Literature
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Earth and Environmental Science
• Social Studies, History, and Government
• Economics
• World Languages
• Computer Science
• Business and other elective subjects
• Advanced, Honors, AP, and college-preparatory coursework

Teachers with expertise in multiple subjects are especially encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have:

• Current or recent experience as a certified high school classroom teacher
• Experience teaching in a public, private, or charter school
• Experience supporting students with diverse academic needs
• Experience teaching advanced, honors, AP, or college-preparatory coursework
• Experience with standardized test preparation
• Experience providing private tutoring or individualized academic instruction
• A master’s degree or higher
• Experience working with students preparing for college admissions or post-secondary education

Schedule

Tutors have the flexibility to build a schedule around their existing professional and personal commitments. Student assignments and tutoring hours are based on family needs, tutor availability, subject expertise, and geographic location.

Tutors may be matched with families based on their location, subject expertise, grade-level experience, and availability.

Minimum Requirements

A successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Hold a valid Virginia teaching license/certificate or equivalent teaching credential
• Have current or recent experience as a certified high school classroom teacher
• Have at least two years of classroom teaching experience in a public, private, or charter school
• Have experience as a lecturer or course instructor at an accredited U.S. college or university
• Be a graduate student with relevant teaching or teaching-assistant experience at an accredited U.S. college or university
