
The Dean of School Culture is hired by the Principal to envision, establish, and support positive school culture through the daily oversight of positive incentives, restorative practices, and student disciplinary issues. This staff member also assists the Assistant Principal and Principal in the academic routine of the day. In the absence of the Principal or Assistant Principal, the Dean of School Culture will assume responsibility of providing oversight of the school building. Also, the Dean of School Culture is committed to the Argosy Collegiate Charter School Board of Trustees’ policies regarding equity, human rights and cross cultural understanding and reports directly to the Principal of the school or his/her designee.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
While actual roles and responsibilities will vary depending on individual circumstances, the Dean of School Culture will generally be required to perform some or all of the following tasks. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and that the administrator may also assign other tasks he/she deems appropriate.
1. Collaborates with Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of Student Services in enforcing the behavioral and academic standards and expectations of Argosy;
2. Uses LiveSchool to keep track of student disciplinary issues on a daily basis and informs Principal of scholars with serious and/or multiple infractions; communicates with appropriate stakeholders and supports with appropriate actions
3. Oversees Restorative Justice Coordinator and restorative justice initiatives including but not limited to re-entry meetings, cultural celebrations, community service, and peer mediations.
4. Invites parents and guardians to meet when their scholar serves an In School Suspension; Schedules and attends Out of School Suspension Hearings; Plans re-entry meetings for scholars who have served an out of school suspension, in collaboration with the Restorative Justice Coordinator and Principal.
5. Collaborates with teachers and counselors, and attends team leader and grade level team meetings; addresses academic/behavior concerns with the team and is open to receiving and giving feedback.
6. Sets-up proactive meetings with parents regarding behavioral/disciplinary issues; assists Principal /Assistant Principal in academic and disciplinary meetings, as needed, including retention meetings.
7. Collaborates with Assistant Principal, Principal, Directors, and School Counselors to address needs of scholars with multiple/repeated disciplinary issues as well as student relationships. These meetings may address the relationship between behavior and academics.
8. Prepares daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly positive reward systems (e.g., manages school store) and participates in assemblies and award ceremonies (in conjunction with Assistant Dean of School Culture); Collects and reviews disciplinary records for Awards nominees.
9. Prepares and displays data detailing individuals and homerooms who have met classroom and school behavior expectations each month, quarterly and yearly for different stakeholders (scholars, teachers, board members, etc.).
10. Collaborates with the Director of Student Services on all Student Behavior Management Plans along with support from the School Counselors and Restorative Justice Coordinator.
11. Supports attendance and appropriate interventions alongside the Operations Team; consults around the filing of court documents to report truancy and other serious behavior to the local court system and reports back to the administrative team with ongoing court cases.
12. Develops, implements, and supervises new scholar incentive programs to improve relationships between staff and scholars and maintain a positive school culture.
13. Manages scholar arrival to ensure an organized, safe, warm welcoming for scholars upon arrival to school.
14. Responsible for the evacuation of the school building during emergency and drill situations, such as fire drills and lockdown drills; trains staff to be prepared for such events outlined in the Multi-Hazard Plan.
15. Assists Principal with supervision of instructional staff; in collaboration with the Principal, provides insight to instructional staff regarding scholar behavior, classroom management strategies, etc.
16. Assists with orientation of new staff members, interviews staff applicants upon request.
17. Any other duties or responsibilities related to this position as assigned by the Principal.
