HGV Master / Senior Diagnostic Technician — Reading

Location: Reading

Sector: Commercial Vehicle Engineering

Employment Type: Full-time, permanent

Recruitment Partner: ANT Recruitment

About the Company

We are recruiting for an established, family-run commercial vehicle business with a busy workshop operation. You will join an approachable team with experienced technical colleagues, manufacturer training and opportunities to develop your career.

The Role

We are looking for a highly skilled HGV Master or Senior Diagnostic Technician for a busy, established commercial vehicle workshop in Reading. If you enjoy solving difficult faults, stripping and rebuilding engines and taking ownership of complex repairs, we would like to hear from you. You will work alongside experienced technical colleagues in a multi-brand environment with opportunities to develop your manufacturer expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use OEM diagnostic equipment to investigate customer-reported faults, trace root causes and complete high-quality rectification
  • Carry out engine strip-down, diagnosis and rebuild work, alongside complex driveline, braking, electrical and electronic repairs; inspect, service and maintain vehicles when required
  • Interpret technical manuals and test information; verify repairs, complete full diagnostic narratives and accurate job cards
  • Support colleagues with difficult faults and coordinate repair planning with the workshop controller
  • Work on a varied multi-manufacturer heavy commercial vehicle fleet under appropriate technical training pathways

Skills and Experience Required

  • Proven senior diagnostic or master-level technical capability, supported by relevant manufacturer training, accreditation or demonstrable experience; master technicians from other manufacturers are welcome
  • Advanced fault finding across electrical, mechanical, powertrain and network systems
  • Level 3 heavy vehicle qualification desirable; strong time-served experience considered where practical competence can be demonstrated
  • HGV/PSV licence, roadside assistance and IRTEC advantageous rather than mandatory

Candidate Profile

You are a methodical diagnostic specialist who enjoys getting to the root of a fault. You can take ownership of substantial repairs, explain your findings clearly and support colleagues when a job needs deeper technical investigation.

Salary, Bonus and Full Package

We offer:

  • Basic salary of £47,000 per annum
  • An additional £2,452 per annum for participation in the Saturday rota
  • Overtime opportunities, with weekends and hours outside basic hours paid at time and a half

Working Hours and Shift Arrangements

  • 40 basic hours per week
  • Monday to Friday
  • Saturday morning rota: one in three mornings

Why This Opportunity?

We provide a comprehensive benefits package:

  • 30 days' annual leave including bank holidays
  • Additional leave at 3, 5, 7 and 10 years' service
  • Option to purchase up to three additional days' holiday
  • Manufacturer training and career development
  • Workplace pension and life insurance
  • Employee accident cover
  • Tool insurance
  • Uniform and PPE provided
  • One free Class IV MOT each year
  • Electric vehicle salary-sacrifice and cycle-to-work schemes
  • Access to mental health first aiders
  • £1,500 technician referral reward, subject to scheme terms
  • Two weeks' paternity leave on full pay
  • A friendly, supportive family-run working environment
  • On-site parking

This permanent opportunity offers the chance to take ownership of complex HGV diagnostics and major repairs, working alongside experienced colleagues in a varied commercial vehicle workshop.
