We are seeking a HFIR Shift Supervisor, which is responsible and accountable for the supervision of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) shift operations. This position reports to the HFIR Operations Section Head and interfaces with all levels within the Research Reactors Division This position resides in the HFIR Operations Section, Research Reactors Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Operation:
Successfully conducts shift operations in accordance with plant procedures, HFIR Technical Safety Requirements, and Safety Analysis Report
Designated as the single point of control for authorizing, directing, supervising, and monitoring plant operations activities.
Notifies higher management of occurrences as required
Supervises the HFIR operations functions required by Health Physics Manual, Security Plan, and their respective implementing procedures.
Promotes good housekeeping by periodically inspecting those areas assigned to Operations.
Ensures that plant operation deficiencies are identified, and corrective actions are initiated
Supervises the Reactor Operators to ensure proper performance of their assigned duties.
Periodically tours the plant to monitor the material condition and operational practices and provides specific instructions when necessary.
Exercises "stop work" authority within the HFIR facility when appropriate
In general, maintains the workplace in a safe condition, ensuring that operators receive adequate instructions on safety, health, and environmental policies and practices. Emphasizes accident prevention as a part of the daily work plan and provides leadership in following safe practices.
Reviews and approves procedure changes.
Monitor plant water chemistry.
Monitor and supervise operations activities in the reactor bay.
Work Control and Planning
Authorizes the on-shift activities of operations and maintenance groups to accomplish the operating objectives for the shift stated in the POD
Authorizes the removal and return to service of equipment and systems for maintenance and testing, or operational activities
Authorizes work start for activities affecting plant equipment and systems
Ensures work is conducted in accordance withappropriate tagging, safety, and configuration control procedures.
Reviews drawing changes.
Reviews maintenance work packages.
Generates LO/TO for maintenance activities.
Provide technical support to engineering for modifications and upgrades.
Qualifications:
Maintains qualification as Shift Supervisor on the HFIR.
Maintains certification as a Senior Reactor Operator on the HFIR.

The HFIR is manned 24/7 and this position is for an on-shift HFIR Shift Supervisor, therefore:
Rotating shift work is required
Some overtime may be required
Basic Qualifications:
A BS degree in engineering or related field with at least 5 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered (AS degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or a HS diploma and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience).
4 years of nuclear experience (two years may be nuclear/non-nuclear power plant experience)
Must be able to obtain and maintain qualification as Shift Supervisor on the HFIR within the first 12 months, which requires a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) certification as a prerequisite.
Preferred Qualifications:
Reactor Operator certification for HFIR (current or past).
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
