Job Description

The Health, Environment, Safety, and Sustainability (HESS) Assistant Manager supports the implementation and enforcement of the organization's HESS programs in alignment with company policies and applicable regulations at one or more Carnival Corporation owned and operated global destinations. This role assists the HESS Manager in ensuring workplace health and safety, environmental compliance, and sustainability efforts across operations. The Assistant Manager contributes to training, monitoring, emergency preparedness, and team supervision to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant performance across departments.

1. Safety Training & Compliance

  • Coordinate and conduct in-house HESS training for employees based on occupational exposure and job function.
  • Maintain detailed training records including training dates, attendance, course content, and evaluation results.
  • Support the HESS Manager in promoting a culture of safety and environmental responsibility through awareness and continuous education.
  • Review emergency protocols and ensure proper documentation of incidents and team response procedure.

2. Technical Monitoring & Environmental Oversight

  • Assist in the monitoring and maintenance of environmental systems such as potable water and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Collect, review, and archive water quality and operational data in compliance with company policies.
  • Support laboratory testing procedures and report results to management for follow-up and corrective actions.
  • Contribute to environmental monitoring activities and support sustainability objectives.

3. Emergency Response & Equipment Readiness

  • Conduct regular inspections of emergency response equipment (e.g., AEDs, oxygen tanks, first aid kits, Ambu bags) to ensure operational readiness.
  • Ensure equipment is stored properly, maintained, and calibrated as required.
  • Monitor emergency inventory and initiate replenishment processes when needed.
  • Verify proper use and documentation of equipment checks, maintenance logs, and inspection reports.

4. Team Supervision & Operational Support

  • Supervise daily activities of HESS Technicians, ensuring punctuality, quality of work, and adherence to safety practices.
  • Ensure proper use and availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for HESS team members.
  • Assist with scheduling, coordination, and operational execution of HESS-related activities and initiatives.
  • Communicate with internal departments to support effective HESS program implementation.

  • Ability to adhere to the company’s standards regarding dress and appearance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and data protection standards when handling vendor financial or business documents
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment as necessary.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multitask effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data entry and reporting tools.
  • Detail orientated with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to multi-task and think critically

  • Strong planning and coordination skills, especially in handling multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Must be physically fit.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment as needed.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.
  • May be requested to work a shift schedule while at any of the destinations.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of workplace policies and procedures / Familiarity with team collaboration tools and techniques.
  • Skills: Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Abilities: Ability to maintain reliable and consistent attendance / Capacity to be punctual and meet deadlines / Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and work as part of a team / Demonstrated professionalism in all interactions and tasks.

HESS Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and guidelines related to health, safety, environmental protection, and security.
  • Take all necessary precautions, use personal protective equipment (PPE), safety devices, and tools correctly and consistently, as required by the nature of the work.
  • Promptly report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or environmental concerns to the appropriate supervisor or HESS representative.
  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety, as well as that of colleagues and others who may be affected by your actions.
  • Actively participate in HESS trainings and initiatives that promote a safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable workplace.
  • Cooperate fully with company efforts to maintain compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Seek opportunities to improve safety and environmental performance in daily tasks.

Essential/Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s degree or coursework in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Public Health, oror equivalent experience is required; additional education in Hospitality or a related field is a plus
  • Valid First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Additional HESS-related training or certifications preferred.

Essential Experience Required

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in health, safety, and/or environmental functions
  • Prior supervisory experience or oversight of technical teams preferred.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices, environmental systems, and compliance procedures
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital recordkeeping
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow established protocols
  • Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including operational and field-based settings.
