Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC has a potential need for a Hemostasis and Coagulopathy Research Scientist (SME) to provide support for our government customer in San Antonio, TX

OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the preeminent Hemostasis and Coagulopathy SME, guiding programmatic investment decisions and optimizing DoW clinical research proposals.
  • Identify and aggregate physiological data regarding bleeding/blood loss and medical interventions for hemorrhaging to design high-impact pre-clinical and clinical studies, providing actionable investment and programmatic decisions to DoW leadership.
  • Review clinical research proposals (internal and external) addressing hemorrhage control and coagulopathy reversal; provide SME recommendations to alter or support study parameters to achieve targeted, optimized patient outcomes.
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of Defense Acquisition Processes to lead and guide the development of advanced blood products and blood substitutes, actively functioning in leadership roles such as chairing/co-chairing Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), advisory panels, and strategic steering committees.
  • Act as the Lead Researcher and/or PI to independently develop, lead, and conduct protocol-driven scientific research addressing critical aspects of military medicine, including hemorrhage/resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed energy bio-effects, craniofacial reconstruction, and bioassay development.
  • Oversee project/program personnel, coordinate team efforts, correlate findings, formulate scientific solutions, propose recommendations, and serve as the primary authority to respond to scientific questions, applying proven, multi-year experience in directly leading and supervising complex laboratory teams.
  • Compile, manage, and rigorously evaluate complex data sets (both Government-provided and Contractor-collected) to ensure scientific validity and actionable outcomes.
  • Lead the development and establishment of complex in vivo and in vitro model systems, directing data acquisition and analysis parameters for these models.
  • Perform advanced survival and non-survival surgical procedures on small and large animal models in accordance with approved IACUC protocols, applying extensive independent surgical expertise in manipulating vascular structures, blood chemistry, and analyzing cellular responses to severe hemorrhaging
  • Prepare experimental subjects, set up advanced experimental equipment, and aid in the training and development of subjects for procedures following approved animal or human use protocols.
  • Independently operate, manage, and troubleshoot advanced blood and blood-product-related laboratory equipment, executing highly specialized analytical procedures for sample collection, preparation, and cryogenic storage.
  • Provide primary support in writing protocol-driven research proposals, preclinical and clinical protocols, technical reports, final reports, and authoring high-level review articles and peer-reviewed manuscripts in the field of hemostasis.
  • Develop and formalize research SOPs based on experimental findings and method optimization.
  • Travel to various conferences, symposia, and meetings to establish collaborative partnerships, collect data, and present DoW needs/requirements and novel hypotheses for challenging conventional approaches to severe blood loss.
  • Navigate and execute complex federal regulatory pathways, applying proven experience interacting directly with the FDA to prepare, manage, and submit Biologics License Applications, Investigational New Drug applications, and similar regulatory requirements for conducting advanced clinical studies.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Masters degree in a biological science discipline such as Hemotology.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain current AALAS accreditation for laboratory animals and CITI training.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in designing, conducting, and overseeing independent pre-clinical (human subjects research) studies associated with low volume
    resuscitation, reversal of coagulopathy, or other aspects of acute resuscitation relevant to combat casualties.
  • Expertise in working with biological specimens and animal tissue especially related to blood cells, blood chemistry, vascular structures, cellular response
    to severe hemorrhaging.
  • Experience working for DoW laboratory(ies)/programs in conducting preclinical and human subjects research, preferably in a lead researcher and/or
    Principal Investigator (PI) role.
  • Completion of American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) accreditation training for working with laboratory animals, and the ability to
    maintain accreditation.
  • Completion of Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training.
  • Experience with blood and blood product-related lab equipment, test apparatuses, sample collection/preparation/storage, and analytical procedures/
    processes.
  • Experience interacting with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in regard to submitting a Biologics License Application (BLA), Investigational New
    Drug (IND) application, or similar process that is required to conduct a research or clinical study(ies).
  • Experience in the development of advanced blood products/blood substitutes, with leadership responsibilities, such as chair/co-chair of integrated product
    teams, authorship of review articles in the field, advisory/subject matter expert roles, participation or chairing steering committees and advisory panels in
    the field, or a closely related field.
  • Must provide proof of immunization, or immunity from or screening for the following diseases according to DHA guidelines equivalent to that provided to active work Armed Forces: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis, Tuberculosis (TB), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Contract employee who has direct patient care) and influenza for all personnel.
  • Must be willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a CAC card.
