Looking for more than a standard workshop role?

Varley Group is seeking a qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join our Fleet Services team at RAAF Base Williamtown, working on specialised vehicles and equipment that support critical Defence operations.

You'll work across a diverse fleet of specialised assets, including Aviation Refuelling Vehicles, Ground Support Equipment and other specialised fleet vehicles, combining hands-on mechanical work with diagnostics, fault finding and customer support.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity offering variety, autonomy and the chance to build your technical capability within a highly skilled and supportive team.

About the Role:

As a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic within our Fleet Services team, you'll maintain, repair, diagnose and support specialised vehicles and equipment, helping ensure critical customer assets remain safe, reliable and operational.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Work on specialised Defence vehicles and fleet equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, diagnostics and fault finding
  • Develop your skills across hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and PLC-controlled systems
  • Work closely with Defence customers and other stakeholders
  • Participate in ongoing technical training and upskilling
  • Work both independently and as part of a close-knit team
  • Contribute to a strong culture of safety, quality and customer service

What You'll Bring

We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on mechanic who takes pride in their work, enjoys solving problems and is comfortable working in a specialised environment. You’ll bring:

  • A recognised Heavy Vehicle Mechanic trade qualification
  • Strong mechanical, diagnostic and fault-finding skills
  • Experience maintaining and repairing heavy vehicles or specialised equipment
  • Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics and maintenance procedures
  • A strong commitment to safety, quality and reliable workmanship
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach to troubleshooting
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a close-knit team
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach
  • Willingness to learn, undertake further training and broaden your technical capability

Essential Requirements:

As this role supports Defence operations, successful candidates will also need to:

  • Be an Australian Citizen
  • Hold a current unrestricted Australian driver's licence
  • Be eligible and willing to obtain and maintain the required Australian Government Security Clearance
  • Successfully complete a Federal Police Check
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical, including Drug & Alcohol testing
  • Be willing and able to obtain HR/HC and Dangerous Goods licences, if required

Highly Regarded:

  • Experience working on Aviation Refuelling Vehicles or Ground Support Equipment
  • Previous Defence, aviation or specialised fleet experience.
  • Veteran or ex-Defence background (Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply)
