Department of Public Works Auto Maintenance Repair Shop

Civil Service or Non Civil Service:

Civil ServiceRepairs and overhauls a variety of heavy vehicle and medium and heavy construction equipment such as, but not limited to, refuse trucks, ladder trucks, dump trucks, truck tractors, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, loaders, backhoes, scrappers, hydraulic cranes, and extractors as a substantially full-time assignment; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

( The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position).

  • Diagnoses motor knocks, noises, and other mechanical failures, disassembles diesel or gasoline engines;

  • Inspects, removes, repairs, and replaces such parts as injection valves, cylinder heads, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, etc.;

  • Repairs and overhauls major units such as brake systems, transmissions, etc.;

  • Inspects, repairs and overhauls complex hydraulic and electrical systems;

  • Repairs various specialized mechanical parts or equipment such as crawlers tracks and drivers, winches, bulldozer blades, scoops, excavating and loading bucket chains, power take-off and control mechanisms, centrifugal pumps, ladder and articulating booms, conveyor belts, etc.;

  • Road tests equipment repaired;

  • Performs minor welding in connection with repair work; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training & Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from a high school; and

  • three (3) years of automotive repair experience under a journey level mechanic, or successful completion of apprenticeship training involving heavy vehicle and/or construction equipment repair work; and

  • one (1) year of work experience in construction equipment repair work.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B); current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate; and by the completion of probationary period, a valid commercial Driver’s License (Class A).
