GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Office of State Lands and Investments (OSLI), Wyoming State Forestry Division (WSFD), seeks a Heavy Mechanic in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This Heavy Mechanic position performs service on fire trucks and other equipment required to be maintained to meet the statutory requirements of managing and protecting State Trust Lands. This position also performs maintenance and supports Federal Excess Personal Property (FEPP) and Firefighter Property Program (FFP) equipment needed to aid counties across the state in suppressing fires. This position plays an important role in filling county and volunteer requests for service and ensures high-quality service is provided to Wyoming's counties and Volunteer Fire Departments. Additionally, this position allows the WSFD to successfully implement the Wyoming Forest Action Plan and support the Agency's mission.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Performs maintenance to agency fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Completes maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and pumps.
  • Fabricates new equipment to appropriate standards.
  • Provides maintenance of FEPP and FFP equipment located in Wyoming's 23 counties.
  • Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various automotive or heavy equipment and other self-propelled or towed equipment.
  • Performs safety inspections on all types of automotive components, heavy equipment vehicles, and fire equipment.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals in order to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.
  • Creates repair orders.
  • Responsible for inventory of shop, equipment, and supplies.
  • Designs and fabricates parts for fire apparatus, ATVs, UTVs, and machinery for specialized applications.
  • Performs various cutting and welding techniques.

Examples of duties


PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to candidates who have welding and fabrication experience.
Preference may also be given to candidates who have experience with firefighting equipment/vehicles, specifically in fire apparatus and pump repair.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and their parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drivetrains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
  • Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.
  • Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and water flow with centrifugal pumps.
  • Knowledge of welding methods, including MIG and TIG.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Associate's Degree
Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a CDL
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a CDL

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to lift up heavy items with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • In-state travel as a Heavy Mechanic will be required.
