The incumbent operates a variety of specialized and heavy-duty automotive equipment. Positions in this class are involved with routine manual operation of this equipment and are responsible for its safe and efficient operation. This position differs from Equipment Operator in that incumbents would be able to drive any piece of equipment regardless of tonnage. S/he follows general directions, including work orders to determine work to be done and routes to be taken, from a supervisor who performs period work inspections. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers and other personnel assigned.
On an assigned shift, in all departments, performs the following:
Operation of a variety of specialized and heavy duty equipment such as back hoe, hi-lift with bucket and/or wingplow, front end loader, dump truck with a plow or wingplow, bulldozer, hydraulic broom (street sweeper), tractor trailer, tractor with mower, pavement rollers and related pieces of equipment;,
Performs minor maintenance work which includes daily checking of zerk fittings and grease when necessary, draining of air valves, checking fuel and oil level, steam cleaning throughout, as required;
Performs any task related to maintenance or upkeep of equipment;
Performs manual work in connection with the operation of specialized or heavy-duty equipment;
Reports problems with equipment and documents same;
Wears safety equipment as required;
Performs related duties as required.
PROMOTIONAL
Continuous and permanent status as an Equipment Operator or Truck Driver in any city
department for one year.
In addition, all applicants must meet the following:
ONE YEAR of full-time experience in the operation of specialized heavy-duty equipment including
hi-lift with bucket (front-end loader), tractor-trailer, and a dump truck with a wing plow or plow.
Verification of experience, affidavit from employer, must be presented at time of filing
application.
OR,
Verifiable training in the operation of a hi-lift with bucket (front end loader), tractor trailer and a dump truck with a wing plow or plow. Training certificate must be presented at time of filing, application.

OPEN COMPETITIVE,
Applicants must meet one of the following:
ONE YEAR of full-time experience in the operation of specialized heavy-duty equipment including hi-lift with bucket (front-end loader), tractor-trailer, and a dump truck with a wing plow or plow. Verification of experience, affidavit from employer, must be presented at time of filing application.
OR,
Verifiable training in the operation of a hi-lift with bucket (front end loader), tractor trailer, and a dump truck with a wing plow or plow. Training certificate must be presented at time of filing application.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT for both PROMOTIONAL and OPEN COMPETITIVE,
1.) At time of filing application, for all departments, applicants must present a current CLASS A,
Commercial Driver's License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles and maintained during employment.
Note: License must allow you to operate vehicles with airbrakes.
2.) All incumbents may be required to participate in training on an Excavator and obtain a training certificate issued by the Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets or an authorized agency during employment in this title.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.
