Summary

The City of Jersey City is seeking qualified and experienced Heavy Equipment Operators in the Department of Public Works in the Sanitation Division. The ideal candidate has experience controlling heavy equipment such as (but not limited to) bulldozers, forklifts, back holes, dump trucks, cargo trucks, and/or hydraulic truck cranes.

Examples of duties

  • Operate heavy equipment/machinery in compliance with the City of Jersey City’s safety operating policies and procedure.
  • Load and unload equipment from vehicles and trailers.
  • Ensure that equipment, material, and the work area/site are maintained, kept clean, and stored in a safe manner.
  • Collect and dispose of scrap, excess materials, and refuse.
  • Assists with the repair and installation of equipment parts, storage areas, and other necessary components.
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments on applicable equipment.
  • Supplies equipment with gas, oil, and water; keeps garage clean and in order; keeps records of trips (if driving vehicles).
  • Checks, cleans, greases, washes, and performs the required adjustments to all applicable equipment and/or vehicles.
  • Operates snow removal equipment to keep roads clear.
  • Drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, and bituminous paving material by pulling levers and turning crank to tilt body and dump contents.
  • May inspect equipment and/or vehicles prior to operating for proper amounts of fuel, oil, water, and to see that tires are inflated and that lights and brakes work properly (if applicable).
  • May make minor emergency repairs to equipment and/or vehicles such as replacing parts/fluids.
  • When not engaged operating heavy equipment, may perform other work such as road and landscape construction, building maintenance and repair work, grounds keeping, laboring, or other unskilled work.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Required Experience: One to two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of construction and maintenance equipment.

Required License: Appointees must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL B)

  • Knowledge of the methods used to operate vehicles and heavy auxiliary equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to clean and lubricate machinery.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to load, unload, and deliver various materials.
  • Ability to detect problems with the operation of heavy machinery.
  • Ability to operate trucks and auxiliary equipment such as snowplows, spreaders, and power take-off in a skilled, safe, and competent manner.
  • Ability to load and unload varied types of freight.
  • Ability to service, clean, and perform minor repairs to equipment.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units
