Waste Connections of Missouri is looking for a safety conscience Heavy Equipment Operatorto join our team in Maryland Heights.
This is a local 513 union position.
Pay: $35.83 per hour
Start Time: Between 4:30 am - 8 am / Working an average of 10 - 11 hours per day

As a Landfill Equipment Operator, your primary responsibility is to operate heavy machinery and assist in various labor-intensive tasks at a landfill site. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the landfill, as well as maintaining cleanliness and environmental compliance This position requires physical stamina, technical skills in operating heavy equipment, and a commitment to workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Operation of Heavy Equipment:
Safely operate landfill equipment, such as bulldozers, compactors, excavators, front-end loaders, and skid-steer loaders, to move, compact, and transport waste materials.
Perform routine maintenance and inspections on equipment to ensure proper functioning and report any mechanical issues or malfunctions.
Adhere to operational guidelines, safety protocols, and environmental regulations while operating equipment.
Waste Handlingand Compaction
Use heavy equipment to push, spread, and compact waste materials to maximize landfill space.
Operate landfill compactors to compress and flatten waste, ensuring efficient use of space and minimizing environmental impact.
Collaborate with other landfill staff to coordinate waste disposal and maintain proper waste separation procedures.
Site Maintenance and Cleanliness:
Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the landfill site by removing debris, litter, and other waste materials using manual labor or equipment.
Conduct erosion controlmeasures, such as grading, reseeding, and installation of erosion controldevices and berms.
Compliance and Safety:
Follow all safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), to minimize risks and maintain a safe working environment.
Adhere to environmental regulations, waste management policies, and landfill operating procedures to ensure compliance.
Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and emergency response drills as required.
Documentation and Reporting
Maintain accurate records and documentation related to equipment operation, maintenance activities, waste disposal, and incident reports.
Report any operational issues, equipment malfunctions, accidents, or injuries promptly to supervisors.
Qualifications and Skills:
1 year + experience operating heavy equipment, such as bulldozers - D6, loaders, articulated dump truck and excavators.
Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to landfill operations.
Ability to interpret and follow operational manuals, instructions, and safety guidelines.
Physical strength and stamina to perform labor-intensive tasks in various weather conditions.
Excellent communication skillsand ability to work effectively within a team.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
Outdoor Work: You will be exposed to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. You will need to work in all weather conditions, which may require wearing appropriate protective clothing. You will be near waste materials which may result in unpleasant odors.
Physical Demands: The job involves physical labor and operating heavy equipment for extended periods. You will need to have physical strength and stamina to perform tasks such as operating controls, maneuvering equipment, lifting, and moving objects, and working on uneven terrain.
Noise and Vibration: The landfill can be noisy due to the operation of heavy machinery, compactors, and other equipment. You will be exposed to loud noises and vibrations, which may require the use of hearing protection.
Shift Work and Overtime: We operate six days a week. You may be assigned to work shifts, including early mornings. Overtime work may be necessary.
