Job Description

MacKay Contracting Ltd. is a progressive and well-established Heavy Civil Construction and Mining Services company. For over 40 years, we’ve taken on projects across Western Canada that others avoid — from highways and overpasses to utilities, mine infrastructure, and large-scale earthworks.

We take pride in valuing our employees and offer competitive wages and benefit packages. Now, we’re looking for a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator – Excavator to join our team and help deliver the projects that shape communities.

How You’ll Contribute

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you’ll be at the heart of our field operations. Your safe and precise operation of excavators and other equipment will keep projects on track and uphold the safety-first culture that defines MacKay. You’ll support your team by bringing technical skill, situational awareness, and a strong work ethic to every shift.

What You’ll Get to Do

  • Operate excavators and other equipment (loaders, dozers, graders, haul trucks) safely and effectively
  • Perform work in compliance with MacKay policies and provincial/federal health and safety legislation
  • Operate in busy environments with full awareness of surroundings and potential hazards
  • Follow directions and non-verbal signals from site supervisors, operators, and ground crews
  • Conduct daily mechanical inspections, complete logbooks, perform minor servicing, and maintain housekeeping of equipment
  • Clean tracks and equipment at the end of each shift
  • Identify existing or potential hazards through field-level hazard assessments and communicate them appropriately
  • Complete and submit daily FLHAs and timecards
  • Support the team with flexibility in shifts and hours as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Who You Are

You’re an experienced operator who thrives in fast-paced construction environments and takes pride in safe, responsible equipment operation. You work well independently and as part of a team and are committed to precision and safety in every task.

You have:

  • Experience operating excavators in civil construction (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of construction layout and staking
  • Familiarity with 3D machine control systems (an asset)
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract
  • Government-issued photo identification
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Effective verbal communication and active listening skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to safe and responsible operation
  • The ability to follow instructions and adapt quickly on site

What’s In It for You

  • Competitive wages and comprehensive benefit packages
  • A strong safety culture supported by training and mentorship
  • Opportunities for growth and advancement across a wide range of projects
  • The chance to be part of a respected company that values its people and builds projects that last

At MacKay, we believe great people build great projects. If you’re ready to operate with precision, safety, and pride, we want to hear from you.
