Pay: $28.00 - $31.00/hour DOE
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Occasional Saturdays: 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Year-Round Overtime Available

Waste Connections is seeking a motivated, experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Technician to join our team at Sun Country Materials Landfill in Riverview, FL This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanic who enjoys working on Yellow Iron and heavy equipment in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.

The ideal candidate will have strong diagnostic and repair skills, experience working on heavy equipment, and a commitment to safety and teamwork. Previous waste industry experience and familiarity with fleet maintenance software are highly preferred.

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of heavy equipment and support vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and scheduled services.
  • Repair and maintain:
    • Landfill Compactors
    • Dozers
    • Excavators
    • Motor Graders
    • Haul Trucks
    • Site Trucks
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, suspension, brake, and air systems.
  • Utilize onboard diagnostic systems and computerized equipment controls.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns, including repairs performed in the field and on the working face of the landfill.
  • Complete work orders and maintenance records using fleet maintenance software.
  • Order parts and build strong working relationships with vendors, site personnel, and office staff.
  • Perform safety inspections and ensure equipment remains operational and compliant.
  • Review Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports and complete assigned repairs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all company, environmental, and OSHA safety policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicate repair priorities and equipment needs to management and operations teams.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of heavy equipment mechanic experience
  • Proven experience working on Yellow Iron/Heavy Equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must provide own tools
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment when necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Waste industry experience
  • Experience with fleet maintenance management software
  • Previous field service experience
  • Welding and fabrication experience a plus

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry over 50 lbs.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, standing, and working in confined or awkward spaces.
  • Work may be performed in a shop environment or directly in the landfill operation.
  • Must be comfortable working around heavy equipment and industrial machinery.
