Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy equipment, machinery, and mechanical systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This position performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and major and minor repairs on diesel-powered equipment and hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic utilizes diagnostic tools and computerized testing equipment to identify equipment malfunctions and perform necessary repairs. This position is responsible for maintaining equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and ensuring all machinery operates safely and in compliance with applicable standards and manufacturer requirements.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heavy equipment, trucks, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, and related mechanical components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine service activities, including fluid and oil changes, lubrication, tire maintenance, equipment inspections, and safety checks.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment, testing tools, and manufacturer-specific software to identify equipment malfunctions and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Disassemble, repair, rebuild, reassemble, and test equipment and components to verify proper operation and performance.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, service bulletins, schematics, blueprints, and diagnostic information to ensure accurate repairs.
  • Communicate with equipment operators, supervisors, and management regarding equipment conditions, repair needs, and maintenance schedules.
  • Order, track, and maintain inventory of parts, materials, and supplies necessary to support maintenance operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, parts usage, and service histories.
  • Operate hydraulic jacks, hoists, lifts, welding equipment, and other shop tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with safety standards and housekeeping requirements.
  • Follow all applicable safety policies, procedures, environmental regulations, and operating standards.
  • Assist with emergency repairs and respond to equipment breakdowns as needed to minimize operational downtime.

Non-essential Job Functions

  • Attend meetings, seminars, workshops, and training sessions as required to support professional development and program objectives.

Qualifications: Job Specifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, and heavy equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices, equipment safety standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Skill in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine-related issues using diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, and service documentation.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, lifting devices, hydraulic jacks, hoists, and other shop equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments, manage multiple tasks, and complete projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records, documentation, and reports.
  • Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, moving machinery, chemicals, fuels, lubricants, and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, vendors, supervisors, and equipment operators.
  • Demonstrated dependability, professionalism, initiative, and commitment to teamwork.
  • Must successfully pass a tribal background investigation and drug screening.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing and qualify under the Quapaw Nation Motor Vehicle Policy.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and diesel-powered machinery.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing Caterpillar (CAT) heavy equipment, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and service documentation.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Trade school diploma or technical certification in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Caterpillar (CAT) Mechanic with current CAT certifications required; certifications must be maintained in accordance with manufacturer training and certification requirements.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or higher is required.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform tasks that require reaching above shoulder level.
  • Ability to push, pull, squat, kneel, bend, and safely lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for meetings, training, seminars, or professional development opportunities.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in shop, field, and outdoor environments.
  • Frequent exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, vibration, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, and moving mechanical equipment.
  • Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
  • Occasional overtime, extended work hours, emergency call-outs, weekend work, and overnight shifts may be required to meet operational needs.
  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Must maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity while working in a diverse environment.
