JOB TITLE: Mechanic

DEPARTMENT: HDOT/ Road Maintenance Program

SALARY: Depending on Experience

CLASSIFICATION: Full Time/Non-Exempt

OF JOB:

Under limited supervision, this position performs repairs and preventative maintenance on all types of automotive, specialized vehicles, and construction equipment (including heavy-duty trucks, semi-tractors, excavators, skid steers, bulldozers, graders, backhoes, man lifts, etc.). Related work is assigned as needed.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by servicing, diagnosing, repairing parts or systems including but not limited to: transmission, hydraulic and undercarriage systems, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, and hydraulics.
  • Performs machine shop operations; makes adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, tire changes/repairs, clutches, and traction units on light and heavy equipment such as trucks, front end loaders, rollers, water trucks, sweepers, single axle trucks, and rubber tire rollers.
  • Assists in managing the fleet by tracking vehicle usage, coordinating maintenance schedules, monitoring repair costs, and recommending equipment replacements or upgrades to maximize fleet efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Oversees and maintains the fleet fuel dispensing system, including monitoring fuel inventory, inspecting pumps and tanks for leaks or damage, performing routine maintenance on dispensing equipment and ensuring accurate fuel records for all tribal vehicles.
  • Responds to emergency road repair/service for trucks and heavy road construction equipment outside of maintenance facilities within 30 minutes.
  • Responds to emergency situations during off-hours as required within 30 minutes.
  • Performs welding as required.
  • Maintains accurate vehicle records by annotating all services and repairs.
  • Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Obeys directives and instructions issued by supervisor or manager.
  • Occasionally delivers and picks up equipment for roads personnel at job sites.
  • Utilizes Microsoft Office, email, and various work web applications when necessary.
  • Maintains preventative maintenance records in iWorQs.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certification/Licensure: Must be ASE certified OR have a documented plan to obtain ASE certification within 1–2 years of hire.
  • Heavy equipment/diesel mechanic experience: 3–10 years preferred.
  • Working Conditions
  • Required to exert physical effort handling and lifting 50–100 lbs. daily.
  • Exposed to potential occupational risks such as burns, cuts, hazardous fluids, and working alone in isolated areas.
  • Exposure to weather (rain, lightning, floods, humidity, hot summer temperatures), loud noise from equipment and traffic, insects (bees, mosquitoes, flies, spiders), rodents (mice, rats), stray dogs, dirt, dust, engine exhaust, fumes, poison ivy/sumac, and pollen.
  • Other Requirements
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License or obtain one within six months of appointment and be eligible for the Tribes’ insurance.
  • Must submit to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing.
