Compensation and Benefits:

Estimated Hiring Salary Range $46,818.00. - $65,915.00 Full Salary Range $46,818.00 - $89,644.00 Annually

The City of Greensboro is seeking an experienced and skilled Heavy Duty Trucks & Equipment Diesel Technician to join our team and help keep essential City vehicles and equipment safe, reliable, and ready for service. Our technicians maintain a diverse fleet of heavy trucks and truck-mounted equipment used across City operations. Through preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and skilled repairs, the team helps ensure City employees have dependable equipment when and where they need it.

About the Role

As a Heavy Duty Trucks & Equipment Diesel Technician, you will perform a wide range of diagnostic, repair, and preventive maintenance work on heavy trucks and truck-mounted equipment. This is the full journey-level classification, requiring significant hands-on experience and the ability to independently perform both minor and major equipment repairs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Diagnosing mechanical and equipment problems and determining appropriate repairs.
  • Performing minor and major repairs on heavy trucks and truck-mounted equipment.
  • Conducting preventive maintenance to help extend equipment life and reliability.
  • Following established safety practices and procedures during all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Using technical knowledge and sound judgment to troubleshoot complex equipment issues.
  • Maintaining a high standard of quality and workmanship.
  • Working with a variety of tools, diagnostic equipment, and specialized equipment.
  • Maintaining personal tools necessary to perform assigned duties.

The position requires four years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs on heavy trucks and equipment.

The successful candidate must currently possess, or be able to obtain within six months of hire, the following:

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement
  • North Carolina Emissions/Safety Inspection License
  • Air Conditioning Recovery Certification

The work requires walking, stooping, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds Employees may be exposed to dust, grease, noise, heat, cold, and inclement weather as part of normal working conditions.

This position is NON-EXEMPT under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
    • "OR" an equivalency of 1 Year Heavy / Medium Duty and Equipment Experience or Heavy Truck / Diesel Technology
  • 4+ years of documented Journey Level experience in heavy truck and equipment repair/maintenance
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Class A CDL License with Tanker Endorsement ("OR" the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date)
  • Emission/Safety Inspection License and/or Air Conditioning Recovery Certification ("OR" the ability to obtain within 6 months from hire date)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or higher in Automotive Systems Technology, Heavy Equipment & Transport Technology or "related" field
  • 5 years of experience in medium and heavy truck maintenance
  • Certified NC Emission/Safety Inspection License
  • ASE Air Conditioning Recovery Certification on Medium / Heavy Truck Series
  • Series. NC Class A CDL License with Tanker Endorsement,
  • Emission/Safety Inspection License and/or Air Conditioning Recovery Certification
