11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
What you'll do and what you'll bring:
Position Function: Under general supervision, direct, lead, assign and perform duties related to inspection, maintenance, repair, replacement, and operation of all heat plant equipment, insuring compliance with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate operating regulations and codes.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Test water samples with chemicals and equipment; adjust chemical supplies in water depending on results of test.
Requires the physical ability to stand, stoop, crouch, kneel, grasp, finger, lift, reach, climb, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read and interpret related Heating Plant instrumentation, perceive depth, and distinguish color. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, related testing equipment, barrel truck, hand truck, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information, and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
2. Record tests and treatment data.
Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, finger, grasp, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to perceive depth and distinguish color. Task requires the ability to operate related testing equipment. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, heights, and confined spaces. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
3. Assign and perform work related to maintenance, repair, and cleaning of the Heat Plant equipment.
Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to perceive depth, read and interpret diagrams, schematics, and related Heating Plant instrumentation, and distinguish color. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, welding machines, cutting torches, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
4. Train Heat Plant staff in procedures for operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment.

Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, welding machines, cutting torches, related testing equipment, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, training reports, and information.
5. Inspect tunnels and equipment for condition and recommend maintenance projects
Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to perceive depth and read and interpret related Heating Plant instrumentation. Task requires the ability to operate hand tools, ladders, and scaffolds. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
6. Acts for supervisor when assigned.
Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to perceive depth, distinguish colors, and read and interpret related Heating Plant instrumentation. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, office equipment, and computer keyboard. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
7. Evaluate and provide feedback on work performance of assigned employees.

8. Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job related chemicals, environmental concerns, and current technological improvements/advancements.

9. Read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, diagrams, and sketches to insure proper specifications are followed.

10. Perform other duties as assigned.
May require any or all of the above mentioned abilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
1.High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
2 .Successful completion of an apprenticeship program as Stationary Engineer as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, or at least six (6) years of experience in operation and maintenance of a coal, gas, and oil fired boiler plant or related equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
3. Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform mathematical calculations.
4. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy. .
5. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
6. You must be 18 years or older.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Vocational school training
2. Supervisory experience.
3. Over six (6) year’s experience.
