This is highly responsible professional legal work, hearing and ruling on child support enforcement matters. The position is responsible for setting referred cases for hearing, conducting hearings, making determinations on cases, and preparing reports and recommendations with accompanying orders for the referring judge’s signature. This position supervises an assistant.

Quasi-judicial functions are reviewed by the assigned administrative judge; however, work assignments are carried out with a substantial degree of discretion and independent judgment within the framework of state laws and rules of procedure. Administrative supervision is provided by the Court Counsel.

This position is funded by federal dollars through an agreement between the State Courts System and the Florida Department of Revenue. Child Support Enforcement Hearing Officers must sign an agreement for work performed for the Title IV-D Child Support Hearing Officer Program.

Education, Experience, Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and Member in good standing with the Florida Bar.
  • Five years of experience in the practice of law, including at least one year of experience in family law; or five years membership in the Florida Bar and a minimum of three years of active legal practice, including experience in family law; or other equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply Florida Statutes and case law concerning child support, including Chapters 61 and 409.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply child support guidelines and determine appropriate exceptions and modifications.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence and ability to take evidence and depositions.
  • Ability to conduct legal research.
  • Ability to grasp, comprehend, and analyze complex legal issues and complicated factual details, arriving at well-reasoned, logical conclusions.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, impartiality, and honesty in handling matters before the court.
