Job Shift: DayUnder general supervision of the Chief Optometrist, provides technical services that include the general and specialized testing of the eyes and visual system, as well as the ordering, dispensing and repairing of eye wear and other administrative and clinical support duties within the Optometry Department. Performs eye screenings and obtains health care information from patients. Maintains records and reports for patient examinations. Upholds the principles of WIHCC’s Vision, Mission, and Value Statements. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information at all times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
- Schedules appointments with patients, and makes reminder or referral calls.
- Provides patient check-in services, ensuring correct patient information including demographics and history.
- Obtains preliminary case history including current medical conditions.
- Conducts pre-testing including, but not limited to, the following: visual acuity testing, pupil assessment, extra-ocular muscle testing, confrontation field screening, color vision evaluation and diagnostic drop instillation.
- Conducts special testing including, but not limited to, the following: auto refraction, lensometry, pachymetry, tonometry, frequency doubling technique (FDT), corneal topography, threshold visual fields, anterior segment and fundus photography, meibomography and optical coherence tomography.
- Performs clerical duties such as maintaining patient files, ordering clinical and office supplies, opening and distributing mail, and answering phone calls.
- Orders and dispenses eyeglasses to patients.
- Assists with fitting eyeglasses and contacts.
- Performs simple repairs to eyeglasses.
- Ensures area is clean and orderly.
- Requires completion of tasks or duties assigned by a supervisor.
- Upholds all principles of confidentiality and patient care to the fullest extent.
- Adheres to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry.
- Adheres to WIHCCs Personnel Policies and Procedures, departmental policies, rules, and regulations.

- Maintains compliance with all Human Resources requirements.

QualificationsMinimum

Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED. At least one year of experience working in an eye care clinic or equivalent setting, or specifically in the optometric and/or ophthalmologic field. Certification as a para-optometric (CPOTM), para-optometric assistant (CPOATM), or para-optometric technician (CPOTTM), by the Commission on Para-optometric Certification (CPC) preferred. Bilingual skills in English and Navajo language. Must maintain a valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license. Must successfully pass a background investigation and maintain suitable requirements for a Child Care position. This position is considered as a Child Care position, which requires a satisfactory background check investigation and is subject to the requirements of the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, as amended (henceforth referred as the ICPFVP Act).
Knowledge, Skills, Ability
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of optical equipment including Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) Machine.
- Knowledge of visual and ocular problems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and instruments.
- Knowledge of OSHA guidelines for blood borne pathogens.
- Knowledge of strong work ethics in the workplace.
- Knowledge of basic application of confidentiality.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Skill in operating medical software programs such as RPMS and EHR.

Physical Demands:
While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, use hands to handle and manipulate objects and equipment, reaches with hands and arms, and communicate effectively verbally and audibly. The employee frequently must stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and may occasionally use taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office setting or outdoor work environment with moderate noise levels. Work environment may involve exposure to physical risks, such as blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, or operating potential dangerous equipment, and requires adherence to all safety protocols. Required work schedules may include evening, weekend, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular schedules and rotation as operational needs dictate.
As required by P.L. 93-638, absolute preference will be given to qualified Navajo applicants.  If there is no qualified Navajo applicant, preference will be given to qualified American Indian applicants.
