HEALTH SERVICES ASSISTANT
NORWALK HIGH SCHOOL / PTECH



The Health Services Assistant (HSA) works closely with the school nurse to address students' health needs and assist the nurse in implementing the school health program.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education administrative policies, rules, regulations and directives
  • Follow Norwalk school policy to ensure student safety
  • Assist the school nurse or administrative designee with administration of first aid, health standards and hazards protocol, and school health safety practices
  • Perform first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in emergency situations
  • Assist in the control of communicable diseases according to procedures
  • Notify School Nurse and Principal of serious incidents, significant health problems, referrals, and possible child abuse
  • Assist the school nurse in communicating with staff and parents regarding health care needs and concerns of students
  • Assist the school nurse with student referrals to medical and dental professionals for follow-up treatment
  • Maintain and update emergency medical cards and health records in accordance with district policy
  • Maintain a current confidential list of students with health concerns
  • Maintain adequate supplies and inventory of supplies for health office
  • Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the health office
  • Assist the school nurse with inputting, maintaining, updating and generating reports from electronic student health records
  • Facilitate student and staff accident reports and route them to appropriate personnel
  • Channel requests for health-related information and nursing services to the school nurse
  • Carry out delegated nursing interventions and procedures, including assisting with activities of daily living, when appropriate
  • Cover the health office when the school nurse is at meetings, in the classroom, or otherwise temporarily out of the health office by addressing routine problems by utilizing established protocol and notifying the nurse of a non-routine, urgent or emergent problem
  • Contribute data for the assessment of students' health complaints, such as initial complaint, temperature, general appearance
  • Perform initial vision and hearing screenings; assist the nurse with all screenings
  • Assist the school nurse with medical emergencies and other crises
  • Complete data entry tasks (e.g., inputting students' immunizations, health assessment, sports physical, and screening data ) from CT State HAR�Blue Form
  • Document according to standard protocols all student visits handled by the HSA and assist the nurse in documenting student visits managed by the school nurse (e.g., inputting name, initial complaint, and time in/out)
  • Prepare computer-generated data reports and records on an as-needed basis as directed by the school nurse or health services supervisor
  • Recognize his/her legal and clinical limitations as an unlicensed health services assistant and function within the boundaries of the role at all times
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information


Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interact in a positive manner with all staff, students, parents, visitors and health care providers
  • Respond to questions and requests in a timely manner
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation
  • Maintain a level of approachability by administration, staff, students, parents and visitors
  • Keep a daily log of all dismissals and send it to the attendance clerk
  • Prepare various bulk mailings throughout the school year
  • Send and copy medical records to various schools and keep a log of dates and where records were sent
  • Work with the School Based Health Center by referring students and providing information that may be useful
  • Distribute immunization records to all 12th graders before graduation
  • Assist nurses to bring 12th grade cumulative health records into the inactive file cabinet and rearrange all incoming 9th grade files alphabetically and move up all files to appropriate grade level
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency or crisis
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
  • Red Cross First Aid Certification


Qualifications/Certificates:

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification required
  • Red Cross First Aid Certification required or prior healthcare experience/training such as EMT, Certified Nurse Aide, Health assistant in physician's office or other medical background as deemed appropriate by School Health Coordinator
  • Interest in working with children and adolescents
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred



Days: Monday � Friday (30 hours weekly/schedule determined by Principal)
Salary: $27.70/hour
