Job Description

The Health & Safety Supervisor is responsible for leading and coordinating the mill's health, safety, industrial hygiene, and fire protection programs. This role provides leadership, coaching, and technical expertise to foster a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Reporting to the Safety & Security Manager, the Health & Safety Supervisor partners with employees, supervisors, and leadership to develop and implement proactive safety initiatives, manage risk, and drive continuous improvement in workplace health and safety performance.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

• Serve as the designated backup for the Safety Manager and assume departmental leadership responsibilities in their absence.
• Provide direct supervision and development of the Safety Liaison, Industrial Hygiene Technician, and Fire Protection functions.
• Partner with leaders throughout the organization to promote accountability and continuous improvement in safety performance.
• Provide guidance and technical expertise on health and safety matters to employees, supervisors, and management.

Safety Programs & Training

• Develop, coordinate, and deliver safety training programs, including New Employee Orientation and ongoing compliance training.
• Work collaboratively with employees and leadership to identify, evaluate, and resolve safety concerns.
• Coordinate computer-based training programs and maintain training compliance records.
• Support management safety meetings through the development of safety communications, training content, and performance metrics.
• Lead site emergency preparedness efforts, including evacuation drills, severe weather response planning, and other emergency action initiatives.

Health & Safety Management Systems (ISO 45001)

• Administer and continuously improve the site's ISO 45001 Health & Safety Management System.
• Manage the risk assessment process and facilitate hazard identification and mitigation activities.
• Coordinate corrective action programs and ensure timely resolution of identified issues.
• Participate in internal and external audits and support ongoing compliance and certification efforts.

Fire Protection & Loss Prevention

• Oversee the on-site fire protection program and contractor relationship.
• Ensure compliance with applicable fire protection and life safety requirements.
• Manage fire protection and loss prevention improvement projects.
• Participate in risk management and insurance-related audits and assessments.

Incident Management & Continuous Improvement

• Lead and support workplace incident investigations to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
• Develop, track, and verify completion of corrective actions.
• Administer the incident management database and ensure accurate reporting and documentation.
• Analyze injury and incident trends and recommend strategic improvement initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance & Operational Support

• Interpret and apply regulatory requirements, including OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, and other applicable standards.
• Review equipment, process, and facility modifications to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
• Serve as an active member of the Union-Management Safety Leadership Council.
• Participate in weekend call rotation responsibilities supporting the Safety and Environmental Departments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of education, training, certifications, and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. Relevant qualifications may include:

• Education in Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience supporting health and safety programs in an industrial, manufacturing, or similar environment.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations and health and safety management systems.
• Experience with ISO 45001 management systems.
• Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, and risk assessments.
• Experience working in a unionized manufacturing environment.
• Professional safety certifications such as ASP, CSP, OHST, or similar credentials.
• Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to influence others, build relationships, and promote a positive safety culture.
