Specialist, Health and Safety
What you'll do
Support EHS activities at the Summerside site, ensuring staff, visitors, contractors, and guests comply with all federal and provincial OHS codes and requirements.
Participate in engaging all personnel in achieving EHS goals and vision, helping to make safety a behavior and cultural value rather than just a policy.
Participate in the investigation of workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses with Department Supervisors; assist in identifying root causes, supporting corrective actions, and reporting to the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) as required.
Support claims management and return-to-work processes in consultation with WCB and HR.
Assist in maintaining and improving EHS audit systems, including PPE, safety stations, chemical inventories, SDS database, and departmental inspections.
Ensure site-level safety metrics are tracked, documented, and reported accurately.
Support the development and delivery of EHS training, monthly safety meetings, WHMIS training, fire zone lists, and other awareness activities.
Participate in annual planning and budgeting for site EHS activities.
Actively participate on assigned teams and projects, including Joint Health & Safety Committee, Policy Committee, EMS Committee, and process improvement initiatives.
Assist in facilitating Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) activities according to the planned schedule.
Provide periodic input and reports on site safety performance and the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
Accompany environmental, health, and safety auditors/inspectors on walkthroughs, supporting all on-site and remote audit activities.
Participate in regular site drills (emergency response, fire, equipment, first aid, first responders).
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and provincial OHS regulations, WHMIS 2015 requirements, and industry standards.
Support ergonomic assessments and provide recommendations for workplace improvements.
Support workplace violence and harassment prevention programs as required by Canadian legislation.
Minimum Grade 12 education required.
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field is considered an asset.
1-3 years of occupational health and safety experience is considered an asset, preferably in industrial, manufacturing, or aviation environments.
Knowledge of PEI OHS Act, Canada Labour Code Part II, WHMIS 2015, and WCB requirements.
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
Willingness to obtain additional training, certifications, and professional development as required (e.g., Internal Auditor ISO 14001/AS9110, ergonomics, incident investigation).

Working Environment:
An individual in this capacity must be aware of that the position will involve:
Occasional travel may be required for business needs, including visits to other company sites.
Ability to walk across various facility areas regularly, maintaining engagement with site operations.
Willingness to adhere to company policies and procedures.
Openness to participate in continuous professional development and training opportunities.
Capacity to work for extended periods at a computer or on the phone.
Must adhere to safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site-specific guidelines.
Overtime may be required from time to time to ensure responsibilities are fulfilled.
