Job Description

Under Section 30 OSHA Act, Accenture is legally required to hire registered Safety & Health Officers. Their core responsibilities are derived from legal obligations and in full compliance to this section of the OSHA Act.

At Accenture, the Safety & Health Officers work on–site, providing a go–between to management by monitoring OHS compliance and providing technical advice, in accordance with the local laws & regulations. They should have strong administrative skills and be certified through recognized bodies. Work Health & Safety Officers work in an increasingly agile business models, which run 7 days and covers standard and non-standard work-timing.

A registered Safety and Health Specialist employed in compliance with section 30 of the OSHA Act shall have the below duties & Responsibilities in Accenture:

1. Implement and Supervise Safety Measures

A registered Safety & Health Officer must supervise and ensure the effective implementation of safety controls, preventive measures and protective arrangements throughout the workplace.

2. Conduct Regular Workplace Inspections

  • Inspect all work areas monthly
  • Record findings in the organisation’s risk register and recommend improvements.

3. Lead Risk Assessments & Safety Audits

  • Conduct audits, surveys, and detailed inspections as required by safety standards.
  • Assist management in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating workplace hazards.

4. Deliver Mandatory Safety Training

  • Conduct induction, refresher, and legal‑requirement training sessions.
  • Maintain statutory training records for compliance.

5. Facilitate Safety Committee Meetings

  • Facilitate bi‑monthly safety communication meetings between management and employees.
    (This aligns with the Act’s requirement that Safety & Health Committees meet at least every two months.)

6. Investigate Accidents, Complaints & Incidents

  • Investigate employee or guest complaints, accidents, and near‑misses.
  • Provide written reports and improvement recommendations.

7. Monitor Emergency Preparedness

  • Assist in designing and implementing emergency plans, including evacuation procedures and incident response measures.

8. Ensure PPE Compliance

  • Verify that all staff are adequately provided with personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE.

9. Maintain First Aid and Health‑Safety Equipment

  • Monitor and manage pharmaceutical and first‑aid supplies
  • Ensure fire‑safety equipment and other safety systems remain functional and compliant (supported by industry‑aligned duties).

10. Promote a Safety Culture

  • Train employees to identify hazards.
  • Encourage proactive reporting and foster employee engagement in health‑and‑safety matters.

11. Prepare Monthly Safety Reports

  • Compile and submit monthly health, safety, and environment (HSE) reports to management or head office.

12. Perform Any Additional Duties Required by Law

  • Carry out any other safety and health duties legally required or assigned by the employer in accordance with the Act’s obligations.

These duties ensure the organization remains compliant with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2005 and its amendments, fulfilling the mandatory obligations outlined under Section 30 on employment of Safety & Health Officers

Additional role: Team Lead.

As a Health and Safety (H&S) Team Lead is responsible for overseeing workplace safety programs, ensuring compliance with regulations, and driving a proactive safety culture. Typical responsibilities include:

1. Leadership & Governance

  • Lead, coach, and support the Health & Safety team in daily operations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the organization’s Health & Safety Management System (HSMS).
  • Set safety objectives, KPIs, and performance targets.
  • Coordinate with senior management to align safety strategies with business goals.

2. Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with local and international health and safety laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date documentation (policies, procedures, logs, certifications).
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to verify adherence to safety requirements.

3. Risk Management

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks in workplace environments.
  • Oversee periodic hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA/JSA).
  • Recommend preventive and corrective measures to reduce incidents.

4. Incident Management

  • Lead investigations for accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
  • Produce incident reports, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans.
  • Track the closure of corrective and preventive actions.

5. Training & Awareness

  • Develop and deliver H&S training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Drive continuous awareness campaigns on safe practices and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure mandatory safety certifications remain valid.

6. Emergency Preparedness

  • Establish and maintain emergency response plans.
  • Conduct drills (fire, medical emergencies, evacuation).
  • Coordinate with external emergency services when needed.

7. Reporting & Performance Monitoring

  • Generate periodic safety reports for leadership and regulatory bodies.
  • Monitor and analyse safety metrics (TRIR, LTIFR, near-miss trends).
  • Provide insights and recommendations for ongoing improvement.

8. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the primary point of contact for internal teams, contractors, and authorities.
  • Support cross‑functional teams with safety guidance during project planning and execution.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through communication and collaboration.

9. Continuous Improvement

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs and update them as needed.
  • Stay informed about new safety technologies, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Champion initiatives to enhance workplace health and wellbeing.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Degree in Health and Safety or any equivalent qualifications accepted under Mauritian OSHA
  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in corporate environment would be a definite advantage
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage critical path and deadlines
  • Good analytical skills, detail-oriented, knowledge of safety procedures
