Job Description

Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Health Information Management (HIM) to lead and advance our health information strategy across the organization. This is a senior leadership role responsible for driving compliance, optimizing health data integrity, and ensuring excellence in HIM operations across our hospital, clinics, and community living center.

Requirements

The HIM Director provides strategic direction, leadership, and operational oversight for all health information functions. This role ensures the integrity, security, and accessibility of medical records while maintaining full compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide visionary leadership and oversight of the HIM department, aligning departmental goals with organizational strategy
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including HIPAA, Conditions of Participation, and accrediting bodies
  • Direct all HIM operations, including record processing, chart completion, coding, auditing, release of information, transcription, and registry reporting (cancer and trauma)
  • Collaborate with medical staff and clinical leadership to ensure accurate documentation, coding integrity, and optimal reimbursement
  • Serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on HIM practices and electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Lead initiatives to improve data quality, workflow efficiency, and system utilization
  • Oversee departmental performance metrics and implement continuous improvement strategies
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, and evaluate HIM staff, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence
  • Develop and manage the HIM department budget
  • Partner cross-functionally to support organizational goals related to service, quality, finance, people, and growth
  • Ensure culturally competent and equitable access to health information and services

Minimum Required Education/Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information and certified as a Registered Health Information Associate (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Minimum of five years work experience in HIM is required. Three year s of supervisory experience is preferred. Proficiency in financial software systems such as Meditech, Point Click Care, and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Power BI, etc

Pre-Employment Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Advanced knowledge and expertise in all aspects of health information management including coding (ICD-10-PCS) and CPT/CHPCS for acute care hospital.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment including computer software applications (e-mail, surveillance equipment/cameras).
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with all levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management, development and implementation of projects/programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, other agencies, employees and administration.
  • Experience with electronic medical record functionality (Meditech preferred)
  • Knowledge of state and federal legislation for HIPAA Privacy, medical record access and release of information and regulatory and accreditation agencies; retention of medical records; storage and retrieval systems.
  • Able to organize and communicate effectively in oral or written communications; initiate, lead mentor and coach staff.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and management.

Necessary Special Requirements Must obtain annual flu vaccination and any job-specific immunizations. Required to submit to a tuberculosis screening process.

Licenses or Certificates Current Colorado driver’s license. Current HIM Certification with AHIMA.
