POSITION SPECIFICS

Title: Health Fitness Specialist

FTE: per diem

Schedule: As needed

Holiday Rotation: None

Weekend Rotation: None

On Call Requirements: None

Work with individuals or groups to help improve client/patient fitness levels or rehabilitate from surgery or injuries. Provides personal performance, health coaching programs and leads safe and effective group fitness classes. Responsible for developing customized exercise plans and providing personalized instruction to Wellspring clients to contribute to health, fitness and wellness goals. Promotes health and fitness in the Wellspring Fitness Center, all while providing a high level of customer service.

POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with healthcare providers including Physical Therapist, Cardiac Rehab Specialist and Physicians to provide complete continuum of care for all members. Provide coaching/direct assistance in setting health and wellness goals through one on one, and/or group sessions or interactions. Coaching and education may be on the topics of chronic disease management, disease prevention, health promotion, and/or behavior change. Recommend safe exercise guidelines in accordance with national certification organization. Conduct fitness assessments and develop exercise prescriptions following the American College of Sports Medicine standards. Review medical history of each participant and modify fitness assessment or exercise prescription accordingly. Refer to provider if follow up is indicated Create documentation using electronic systems (i.e., EMR, charting or other specified program etc.) for each interaction. Supervise fitness center and uses educational background and other relevant training to accurately and safely answer member questions related to health, fitness, and wellbeing. Collect biometric data such as height, weight, blood pressure and demographic data, consent forms, etc. as related to measurement of progress towards client’s goals. Provide members with a detailed tour of the fitness center (ie. Location of scale, water fountains, restrooms, and locker rooms, protocol for sanitizing equipment, etc.). Orient, instruct and monitor members on the safe and effective usage of cardiovascular, strength, balance, and other fitness equipment. Observe, practice, and research as necessary to prepare appropriate lesson plans for group fitness classes. Provide safe, effective exercise classes with appropriate variety and progression. Arrive early enough to set up equipment and greet participants prior to each class. Return all equipment to appropriate storage locations, and ensure area is neat and clean before leaving. Develop and implement programming to include effective group presentations, on or off-site based on best-practices. Topics include, but are not limited to: exercise, nutrition, weight reduction, and stress management. Assist with health and wellness promotion initiatives including bulletin boards, articles, health promotion handouts, and other educational information to clients. Greet and direct, as appropriate, all wellspring members, visitors, and patients, utilizing skills consistent with quality customer service orientation. Provide a high level of personalized attention to members. Handle on-site customer concerns and complaints; involve supervisor as appropriate. Monitor cleaning supplies and equipment issues in the fitness center and notify supervisor as appropriate. Assist the Wellspring Supervisor in evaluating performance and coaching program(s). Assist in training of other associates as directed and complete other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Required: Associate’s degree in exercise science or related field for employee hired after 4/1/2022

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science or related field that provides knowledge of kinesiology.

Experience:

  • Required: None

  • Preferred: Experience as a Personal Trainer and or experience in direct education and/or coaching with individuals for chronic disease management, disease prevention, health promotion, and behavior change. Experience with class instruction for Yoga, Water Exercise and/or boot camp style classes.

Licenses and Registrations:

  • Required: None

  • Preferred: None

Certification(s):

  • Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) – within 3 months of hire. Life Guard Certification Required if instructing Water Exercise Class. Certified Personal Trainer or Certified Trainer through a reputable national organization such as ACE, ACSM, AFFA, COOPER, ISSA, NASM or NSCA within 1 year of employment.

  • Preferred: American College of Sports Medicine certification as Clinical Exercise Specialist, Health and Fitness Specialist or Personal Trainer
