He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Health, Safety & Wellbeing unit has an opportunity for 2x permanent full time Health and Safety Advisors to join the team! These hybrid roles ( 3x days in the office) are based in the Auckland CBD, with travel required to support our sites You’ll be part of a high‑trust environment that supports flexibility, autonomy, and accountability.

The Advisor plays a key role in supporting managers, people leaders, and kaimahi by providing practical Health and Safety advice and guidance. This role offers the opportunity to pioneer, design, develop and implement Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) systems and frameworks across a large, complex and ever transforming organisation.

As a subject matter expert in H&S legislation, regulations, risk management, and best practice, you will drive a consistent approach to HSW across the organisation, including within the HSW team. You will ensure systems meet required standards, support quality assurance activities, , manage documentation, and create resources to support our kaimahi to be safe, healthy and well at work.

No two days are the same in this dynamic role, offering the opportunity to work across diverse projects while fostering strong cross-functional collaboration.

The remuneration range for these roles are $100,000 - $110,000 depending on experience and skillset.

As the visible point of contact you build trust, influences positive behaviours, and reinforce a strong safety culture. You help ensure people feel supported, confident to raise concerns, and engaged in maintaining safe practices. Your presence plays a key role in driving consistent standards, improving outcomes, and embedding HSW into everyday operations.

Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities

You will work with the HSW Systems and Assurance Team to provide advice to People, Safety and Wellbeing directorate, and the teams across Auckland Council. You will utilise a strong working knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, associated regulations, and relevant national and international best practice (e.g. ISO 45001) to inform decision-making and practice.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

• Contributing to lifting organisational capability by offering technical guidance, peer support, while acting as an escalation point for HSW issues.
• Collaborate with the wider organisation to design and develop, procedures, and guidelines, ensuring a strong focus on end-user experience, simplicity, and full legal compliance.
• Support systems and processes by providing accurate information and insights to inform new workstreams and organisational projects.
• Support internal and external audits, ensuring compliance requirements are met and continuous improvement opportunities are identified.
• Assist in the management of HSW documentation, including overseeing and supporting change request processes for systems and documentation updates.

He kōrero mōu: About you

We are seeking a HSW technical expert who is confident in their relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills. You will be comfortable communicating with a wide and diverse range of audiences, tailoring your approach to take your audience on a journey together whilst influencing them.

You are an autonomous professional with strong organisational capability, able to effectively manage and pivot in response to shifting priorities within ambiguous environments. You bring a responsive and proactive approach to your day-to-day work, ensuring you consistently deliver timely, practical guidance to support key business needs.

You can research and critically evaluate information, effectively distinguishing between reliable and unreliable sources to ensure advice is grounded in best practice, including the application of Human Factors and Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles.

We will be looking for specific experience with:

• Minimum Level 6 H&S qualification or equivalent and professional body accreditation (e.g NZISM)
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand health and safety legislation and regulations, including the wider regulatory environment, along with an understanding of relevant national and international H&S frameworks and best practice.
• Experience in HSW risk management, including application of ISO 45001 standards and ACC AEP audit requirements.
• Demonstrated capability in writing H&S standards, policies, procedures, guidelines, and other documentation that is suitable for a range of audiences.
• Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience within similar roles
• Demonstrated ability to deliver Health & Safety projects while responding effectively to business requests for H&S advice and support, including contributing to assurance, verification, and auditing activities.
