Job Description

The Head Tennis Coach leads the daily operations of the tennis program while also teaching and coaching tennis directly. This role develops the program's curriculum and player-development pathway, prepares players for competition, and supervises the Assistant Tennis Coach. The Head Coach sets the technical, strategic, and cultural standards of the program and ensures a safe, structured, and positive training environment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead the daily operations of the tennis program.
• Teach tennis and lead practices, drills, conditioning, and match-play instruction.
• Develop the seasonal curriculum, practice plans, and player-development pathway.
• Prepare players for matches and competition.
• Supervise the Assistant Tennis Coach, including assigning work, monitoring performance, and providing ongoing feedback.
• Ensure the Assistant Coach follows the approved curriculum and program expectations.
• Maintain attendance and other required program records.
• Communicate with players, parents, staff, and leadership.
• Ensure proper youth supervision and required staff-to-youth ratios.
• Follow and enforce all BGCMLA safety, behavior-management, emergency, and incident-reporting procedures.
• Report injuries, incidents, and safety concerns immediately.
• Inspect the courts and equipment before each session.
• Oversee equipment set-up, inventory, maintenance, storage, and clean-up.
• Support matches, tournaments, and special events.
• Complete required meetings, training, certifications, background checks, and mandated-reporter requirements.
• Follow all BGCMLA attendance, timekeeping, and professional boundary policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics & Health.

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

• Previous experience coaching tennis and leading or mentoring other coaches.
• Experience working directly with youth.
• Strong knowledge of tennis fundamentals, techniques, strategy, and competitive play.
• Demonstrated ability to design curriculum and develop players toward competition.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with youth of varying ages and skill levels.
• Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with youth and families.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work scheduled weekday and/or weekend sessions.
• Must successfully pass all required background checks before beginning work with youth.
• CPR and First Aid should be completed before the employee independently supervises youth. ?
• USPTA or PTR certification (or equivalent) preferred.

SCHEDULE

Part-time, seasonal position, approximately 15 hours per week. These hours include all required work—time on the court as well as planning, meetings, attendance and record-keeping, parent communication, set-up, clean-up, and administrative responsibilities. All time worked must be recorded.

Schedules may vary based on practices, matches, tournaments, special events, and facility availability, and may include occasional evenings or weekends.

The program operates year-round, from August 10 through August 7 of the following year, including summer programming. The program observes closures based on the school-break calendar; specific closure dates are provided in the annual program calendar, which is updated each year.
