To further strengthen its strategic research profile, the UFZ is seeking an outstanding scientific leader to head one of its six major Research Units, Ecosystems of the Future

Your tasks

Role and Responsibility: The Head of the Research Unit ‘Ecosystems of the Future’ will shape and advance the Unit’s scientific vision and strategic direction within the broader institutional and international research landscape. The position includes overall responsibility for the strategic, personnel, and financial leadership and management of the Research Unit. It further involves the development and implementation of an ambitious research strategy in line with the UFZ strategy, strengthening the Unit’s scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and political and societal impact.

Professional Excellence: The Head is expected to develop the Unit as an internationally recognized flagship centre for research and innovation on biodiversity and future land ecosystems, building on the excellent knowledge, skills and experimental facilities of the Unit. A key objective is to foster synthesis of ecological knowledge, and engagement in international and national advisory panels and science-policy platforms.
The Unit’s research is built on a unique portfolio of large-scale, long-term research infrastructures with a strong global reputation, including the Global Change Experimental Facility (GCEF), the Bad Lauchstädt Experimental Research Station, and the research networks TERENO and eLTER The Head will be responsible for strategically strengthening their academic impact, international visibility, and societal relevance.

Leadership and Management: The Head of the Research Unit will provide inspiring, inclusive, and responsible leadership for eight departments, encompassing approximately 150 staff members across disciplines and career stages, including scientists, technical staff, and research assistants located in Leipzig, Halle and Bad Lauchstädt. The Research Unit operates with an annual budget of approximately 10 million euros in institutional funding and a further 10 million euros in competitive third-party funding. In this role, the successful candidate will also be responsible for ensuring the effective management and sustainable operation of the Unit’s experimental facilities.

The position is a tenured appointment. The role of Head of the Research Unit is designed as a long-term strategic leadership function and will be subject to regular performance evaluations at five-year intervals. A joint professorial appointment with a university is possible. The Head of the Research Unit will be supported by a dedicated team. The UFZ provides a comprehensive institutional support structure, including an International Office, a Family Support Office, and services for employees with disabilities or special needs.

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience within the applicable salary range of the UFZ and includes the social benefits customary in the German public sector.

Your profile

The UFZ is looking for a leader who combines scientific excellence in a relevant field of research with strong leadership skills and proven management competencies. We expect a personality with a distinguished scientific track record and a profound interest in actively shaping rapidly evolving digital and data-driven research environments. An excellent international reputation and strong engagement in relevant international scientific networks are essential. Experience in serving on international and national advisory boards and in science communication is highly desirable. Interviews will take place at the UFZ in Leipzig on 5 and 6 October 2026. Candidates selected for an interview will be invited to take part in an on-site programme introducing them to the UFZ and its research environment. Details of the programme will be communicated in advance of the interview.
As part of the selection process, candidates are invited to deliver a presentation outlining their strategic approach to the further development of the Research Unit, followed by a structured interview with the committee.
