Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is to be a place for art and a catalyst for ideas, offering experiences that strengthen and enrich our communities. With a collection of more than 18,000 artworks and over 500,000 visitors each year, the Gallery is a centre of excellence in engaging people with art through exhibitions, programs and, publishing, its membership and patron programs and community outreach.

We are looking for an experienced and highly connected senior leader to head the Gallery’s Philanthropy and Business Development. This is a pivotal leadership role, working closely with the Director and senior leadership team to grow philanthropic giving, corporate partnerships, grants, membership, retail, events and other revenue-generating opportunities that support the Gallery’s strategic vision and long-term sustainability.

As Head of Philanthropy and Business Development, you will develop an ambitious, integrated fundraising and enterprise strategy that delivers to the Gallery’s financial targets, building enduring relationships with major donors, trusts and foundations, corporate partners, patrons, members and key stakeholders with the Director and your team, and look to grow the financial sustainability of the organisation.

You will lead a talented team across membership, donor and philanthropic relationships, business development and partnerships, venue hire and events, while also working closely with the Senior Manager, Retail to support the ongoing commercial success and contribution of the Gallery’s retail operations.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the Gallery’s future, and strengthen the Gallery’s fundraising capability and financial sustainability, broaden its supporter base, and create meaningful partnerships that enable art, ideas and public engagement to flourish.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You will be an experienced senior leader with a strong background in philanthropy, fundraising, sponsorship, business development or strategic partnerships. With proven success growing revenue, securing major gifts or partnerships, and leading high-performing teams, you will bring the relationships, commercial acumen and strategic focus needed to strengthen support for a significant cultural institution.

To guide you further we are ideally looking for an individual with:

  • A bachelor’s degree in either business, arts, marketing or communications, and in addition, a Master’s would be viewed as advantageous
  • A minimum of approx. 8 – 10 years senior management experience including developing new revenue sources, fundraising, building and strengthening stakeholder relationships, and a track record of success in grants and major gifts is required.
