The Opportunity

As our Head of Payroll at Veolia Australia, you will be responsible for leading all aspects of payroll operations and strategy, ensuring payroll services are delivered on time with the highest degree of compliance. You will provide leadership, strategic direction and development to a team of 12, with four direct reports, driving for continuous improvement for team performance, systems and processes. You will lead the integration and transformation of payroll systems and processes to ensure you enhance efficiency, scalability, and the employee experience of payroll services. What you'll be responsible for

  • Deliver accurate, timely payroll across multiple pay cycles (weekly, salaried, executive and off-cycle), with final review and sign-off authority for all payruns

  • Navigate superannuation, PAYG, payroll tax, Fair Work Act, and state Long Service Act requirements while ensuring statutory reporting is always on point

  • Lead production and reconciliation of annual payment summaries to ATO standards, keeping Veolia audit-ready year-round

  • Drive payroll strategy and lead transformational process improvements that streamline operations, enhance reporting capabilities, and genuinely improve how the team works

  • Collaborate with Digital, HR, IR/ER, Compensation and Benefits teams to resource and implement initiatives that move the needle—from enterprise agreement consolidation to simplification

  • Set clear strategy, coach team members through policy and award changes, and foster cross-functional knowledge sharing that elevates capability across the function

  • Cultivate strong relationships with internal teams and external partners to ensure seamless collaboration and service delivery

What you'll need to be successful

  • Extensive, demonstrable payroll leadership experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance/Accounting/Business or a similar area

  • Proven experience in a large, complex organisation

  • Experience in implementing process improvements
