Chepstow House School is an established 3 form entry, Co-ed Prep with a nursery attached and outstanding facilities within the Notting Hill Gate area. It is a growing school offering opportunities for staff development and career progression.

We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Head of Music who will promote and develop a positive and engaging learning environment. You will build strong relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues, contributing to the wider life of the school and maintaining a classroom environment that encourages growth, respect, and high standards.

This is a permanent role starting in September 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and manage peripatetic music staff, including recruitment, timetabling, and communication with parents.
  • Promote and coordinate instrumental lessons, enrichment groups, concerts, and wider music opportunities within the school.
  • Plan, deliver, evaluate, and develop a progressive music curriculum for Reception to Year 6, ensuring varied and inclusive musical experiences.
  • Teach engaging weekly lessons, including whole-class recorder (KS1) and ukulele (KS2), and integrate music technology in upper years.
  • Develop pupils’ musical skills through listening, appraising, composing, and performing across a range of styles and genres.
  • Create and maintain a safe, stimulating, and well-managed classroom environment that supports pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
  • Organise music examinations, direct school performances, and lead ensembles, choirs, clubs, and instrumental groups.
  • Support and lead music in assemblies, concerts, and extracurricular events, including opportunities for individual pupil performance.
  • Work collaboratively with SLT and staff on school development planning, events, and curriculum delivery.
  • Manage resources, subscriptions, pupil records, assessments, and reports, maintaining clear communication with parents.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Degree-level education with PGCE, QTS, or an equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Strong subject knowledge, including music theory, composition and performance.
  • Proven experience of delivering high-quality Music lessons with clear progression and ambition.
  • Experience leading ensembles, choirs and school productions.
  • Able to engage and motivate pupils, encouraging a genuine interest in music.
  • Confident in assessing progress, giving clear feedback and supporting pupils to achieve well, including in exams.
  • Experience supporting pupil wellbeing and contributing to strong pastoral care.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents, and to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Well organised, able to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Committed to ongoing professional development.
  • Positive, flexible and proactive approach to working in a busy school environment.
