Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.

Are you a strategic technology leader with the drive and ambition help us deliver on our modernisation agenda?

As Head of Modernisation Enablement, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping how BNZ tracks and delivers its technology modernisation agenda — aligning strategy, architecture, investment, governance and delivery to support a simpler, more resilient and future-ready technology estate.

This role is a Wellington based hybrid role with three days in the office per week.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We sat down with our GM Technology Strategy and Architecture, and they let us know the following about the role.

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?

Bring Technology GMs and Heads of Architecture together around enterprise modernisation targets, priorities and delivery expectations.

  • Bring Technology GMs and Heads of Architecture together around enterprise modernisation targets, priorities and delivery expectations.
  • Lead reporting, analytics and insights across decommissioning, BMI targets, asset management and investment alignment.
  • Triage issues, unblock delivery challenges and manage modernisation-related risks through to resolution.
  • Shape governance approaches that support timely, effective and regulator-ready decision-making across Technology.
  • Prepare executive-ready agendas, presentations, briefing packs, business cases and papers for Executive Forums.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

This is a rare opportunity to influence how modernisation is understood, prioritised and delivered across Technology. You’ll operate close to senior decision-making, turn detailed information into clear insight, and help shape the way BNZ invests in a simpler, more resilient and future-ready technology estate.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

The challenge is balancing pace with competing priorities. You’ll need to bring structure to ambiguity, influence senior stakeholders with different priorities, and keep the modernisation agenda moving while maintaining strong governance, risk awareness and executive confidence.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this tūranga?

You’ll bring strong executive presence, commercial judgement and the ability to influence without always owning the delivery. You’ll be comfortable navigating ambiguity, synthesising information for senior audiences, building trusted relationships and leading with curiosity, pace and integrity.

What specific tech skills would be beneficial?

  • Experience operating at Executive and senior leadership levels in a large corporate or government enterprise.
  • Strong understanding of technology strategy, architecture, investment portfolios and enterprise governance.
  • Experience using metrics, reporting and insights to support senior decision-making.
  • Financial services experience is essential; knowledge of BNZ’s organisational processes and structure would be beneficial.
  • People leadership experience, including coaching, performance, engagement and team development.
