Job Description

Reporting directly to the Country Medical Director for GSK JapanThis role provides senior leadership forMedicalperformance, operations, and governance in Japan. The Head of MedicalInnovation,Performance,and Governance is accountable for driving operational excellence, strategic performance, and robust medical governance across theMedicalfunction, ensuring that all medical activities are compliant, efficient, patient-focused, and aligned with both global standards and local regulatory requirements. The role bridges strategy, execution, and assurance, enablingMedicalteams to deliver high-quality scientific and medical value with confidence.

Key Accountabilities

- Lead and integrate medical performance management, operational excellence, and governance across Japan Medical.

- Act as a strategic partner to Japan and Global Medical leadership, supporting prioritization, resource allocation, and decision-making.

- Ensure medical activities are planned, executed,monitored, and documented in a compliant, defensible, and effective manner.

Performance and Strategy

- Develop and execute medical performance and operational strategies aligned with medical and enterpriseobjectives

- Define KPIs, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms tomonitordelivery, quality, compliance, and resourceutilization

- Analyze performance trends and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

- Support strategic planning, budgeting, and investment decision-making acrossMedicalteams.

Operations and Business Excellence

- Design, implement, andoptimizeMedical operationalprocessesleveragingtechnologyto improve efficiency, productivity, and quality.

- Oversee Medical-owned operational processes and ensure alignment with cross-functional partners including Finance, HR, Tech, and Procurement.

- Lead strategic projects and change management initiatives, ensuring organizational readiness and adoption.

Medical Governance

- Provide leadership and accountability for medical governance in Japan, aligned with global standards and local regulatory and industry expectations.

-Establishand maintain local governance frameworks, SOPs, and guidance covering allMedicalactivities.

- Serve as the primary governance advisor toMedicalleadership on complex or high-risk issues.

- Ensure compliance with MHLW guidelines, PMDA requirements, and JPMA codes.

Monitoring, Oversight and Assurance

- Oversee risk-based governance monitoring and assurance activities.

- Review findings from monitoring, audits, and inspections, and drive corrective and preventive actions.

- Act as a key contact for internal and external audits or inspections related toMedicalactivities.

Training and Capability Building

- Set direction forMedicalgovernance, operations, and performance training and onboarding.

- Build capability acrossMedicalteams through practical guidance and sharing of best practices.

- Lead and develop team members, fostering a culture of accountability, ethical decision-making, innovation, and continuous learning.

Collaboration and Leadership

- Collaborate closely with Medical Affairs leadership, Field Medical teams, Regulatory, Legal, Ethics & Compliance, Commercial, and global partners.

- Lead through influence in a matrix environment, promoting clarity on roles, decision rights, and escalation.

Qualifications and Experience

- Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Business, or related field; MD, PhD, PharmD, or MBA preferred.

-Significant experiencein pharmaceutical or biotech Medical Affairs, governance, operations, or performance leadership roles.

- Strong understanding of the Japanese regulatory and industry environment.

- Proven experience driving operational excellence, performance management, and leading through change.

- Fluent Japanese and business-level English.
